SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A 101-year-old Utah woman who ushered in her birthday with a tandem paraglide ride last year soared into the record books Tuesday.

Great-great grandmother Mary Hardison, of Ogden, has been officially recognized as the "Oldest Female to Paraglide Tandem" by Guinness World Records. She has supplanted a 100-year-old woman from Cyprus who took her flight in 2007.

Hardison flew with an instructor on Sept. 1, 2011, while four generations of her family watched and cheered. The flight went smoothly and even included a few tricks that Hardison encouraged.

Hardison said she wanted to paraglide because her 75-year-old son began doing it as a hobby.

"I didn't want him to get too far ahead of me, so I decided that I'd go too," she said Tuesday.

Fear never entered the equation for Hardison, who previously rode all of the adult rides at Disneyland to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Hardison said she was shocked to learn her flight had become a world record.

"To me, I was just going on a little ride," she said. "I had no idea I'd break a record."

Hardison said her active lifestyle has already inspired others her age to pursue similar adventures.

"Some people have said, 'Well, if you can do that at your age then there's no need for me to just sit around,'" she said. "My desire is for the elderly to keep on going. Do things as long as you are physically able. Be positive. Friends don't like a grumpy person."

When Hardison decided to take the birthday leap, family members were concerned for her safety. After all, it was her first flight and she was the oldest customer the paragliding company had ever taken into the air.

"My first reaction was she was nuts," said daughter-in-law Bonnie Hardison. "But everyone is just so excited and thinks this record is great."

As for any future flights, Mary Hardison, who spends her days quilting for charities, is just playing it by ear.

"If the notion strikes, I'll go again," she said.

Motorola Solutions files patent lawsuit

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) ? Electronics maker Motorola Solutions Inc. filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday asking a court to throw out several patent infringement claims against its customers.

Motorola, which is half the former Motorola Inc., is seeking a quick end to the earlier lawsuits so they don't bog down the company in legal fees.

Motorola said in its lawsuit that Round Rock Research LLC sued Motorola's customers late last year, claiming the customers were violating its patents for radio frequency identification, or RFID, technology.

Round Rock Research, whose website describes it as a patent licensing company, did not immediately return a message seeking comment Wednesday. According to the website, Round Rock's portfolio includes several thousand patents and pending applications throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Several of the companies Round Rock sued for infringing on its RFID patents turned to Motorola Solutions for legal protection, according to Wednesday's lawsuit. Motorola Solutions said it manufactured some of the RFID equipment, and the companies felt it should help them.

Motorola said its products don't violate Round Rock patents. With the complaint it filed in Delaware federal court, Motorola is seeking a court declaration to that effect.

The old Motorola Inc. split in January 2011. Motorola Solutions makes police radios, bar-code scanners and other equipment, and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. makes cellphones and cable TV boxes. Google Inc. is in the process of taking over Motorola Mobility in a $12.5 billion deal that's been cleared by U.S. and European regulators.

Shares of Motorola Solutions, which had revenue of $8.2 billion last year, rose a penny Wednesday to close at $50.50.

I am always happy to arrive in New Zealand. We landed at 6 AM as Auckland was waking up. The flight was long and our old bones stiffened in the cramped airplane seats. He had recently had open heart surgery and he was addicted to codeine pain pills. His only caretakers were some people whose motives we had long suspected. We thought they were more interested in his money than his health. We were relieved when another friend whom we like and trust, agreed to go to Arizona to take care of him. We expected this friend to stay with Bert while we were in New Zealand. We planned to go to Arizona to check on him as soon as we got home. A few days before we left our friend called to say he couldn?t stay with Bert any longer. Bert was addicted to prescribed opiates and had been put on methadone to treat his addiction. He was allowed one methadone pill per day, but he demanded more and when this was refused he threatened to shoot himself.? Our friend said he couldn?t stay under those circumstances. So Bert was again left in the care of people we did not trust.

We had left Jocelyn?s phone number so we could be reached in case Bert got worse. Sunday morning as we were having breakfast the call came. I had been jumpy every time the phone rang anyhow, and when Jocelyn answered and? said, ?Oh yes, Jerry, he?s right here,? I knew it would be bad news. My quiet, calm husband took the phone, listened a minute and gasped, ?Oh no!? and again, ?Oh, no!?. Then, ?When did it happen?? He listened a little longer, walked into the living room with the phone and stood at the window with his back to the room. I put my arms around him from behind. I could feel him tremble. He listened some more, then said, ?Of course, I?ll take care of all the expenses.? and finally hung up. As he turned to walk into the bedroom I could see that his eyes were wet.

What the man who had been taking care of Bert had told Jerry was this: the day before (the day of my birthday party) Bert had shot himself in the head. He had gone to a convenience store with the caretaker. While the caretaker was in the store Bert stayed in the truck and used the caretaker?s loaded gun, conveniently placed between the seats, to kill himself. The man complained to Jerry about the mess in his truck. He did not say sorry for your loss or express any regret.

The rest of our vacation, though we tried to salvage some of it with walks and quiet talks, was pretty much taken up with emails, faxes, telephone consultations with lawyers, lawyers in Washington, Arizona, and we even had to have a lawyer in New Zealand notarize papers for the funeral home.

Bert was a year and a half younger than Jerry. Though they had lived completely different lives, in many ways they understood each other profoundly, intertwined by family, proximity, and the occasional need to act together as they did when their mother was dying. Jerry and his late wife raised their son there. Bert built things and flew airplanes. That?s what Jerry did, but Bert came to flying late and logged many fewer hours in the air than Jerry. His buildings were never standard so he tended to be constantly in disputes with building inspectors. Nevertheless, with his frugal lifestyle he ended up with a comfortable income and little bits of property all over the place.

I believe that Bert actually had a few good years of life left in him, but he couldn?t give up the idea that he knew better than anyone else how to manage his health. He knew better than the doctors, than the physical therapists, than his real friends and than his brother. He was beginning to be angry even with the caretakers he thought were his friends. Was he afraid of death? Was killing himself an act of consummate bravery? Or was this his last triumphant act to prove his control over his destiny.

It was a tragic end to a long life of jousting modern windmills. Just before he died he lost his legal battle with the Lincoln county weed board. He had sued them for coming on his property to spray noxious weeds. He lost his last appeal three weeks before he died.

Overnight, three to five inches of snow fell in southern Indiana and north-central Kentucky, where recovery efforts were underway after Friday's deadly twisters, the National Weather Service said.

The fast-moving tornadoes, numbering at least 30, splintered blocks of homes and tossed around vehicles like toys.

Officials said the death toll was at least 39 -- 21 in Kentucky, 13 in Indiana, three in Ohio and one in Alabama. Georgia also reported a storm-related death.

One casualty was a toddler who survived a tornado in New Pekin, Indiana, and was found alive in a field. However, the 14-month-old girl died of her injuries Sunday. Her mother, father and two siblings also were killed.

In hard-hit West Liberty, Kentucky, the wet, heavy snow is contributing to the danger of more structural damage to buildings already weakened by the storm.

The snow has already caused the collapse of 20-foot by 30-foot tent set up to serve meals to emergency workers and survivors. Kentucky Baptist Convention volunteers shifted meal service to a crowded community center.

The snow had started to melt by early afternoon, and the region will have a break from storms the remainder of the week to focus on clean-up, according to the National Weather Service.

West Liberty's main street was congested with emergency workers, insurance inspectors and security personnel Monday morning, as shop owners and employees tried to return to their stores to assess the damage.

Among them were Linda Oakley, who along with her husband, Dale Oakley, accompanied firefighters into the storm-damaged All Occasion Flowers.

They used flashlights to survey the pitch-black store and found it a mess -- water on the floor, insulation hanging from the ceiling and smashed pots. Mysteriously, some floral arrangements on light-weight shelves remained intact. Thomas, the store cat, was found alive, but he wouldn't come out of his hiding place.

"Anything we can do to get back to normal business, (residents) will see that as a reason to believe we can recover," said Linda Oakley, an employee at the shop.

The region's weather was clearing on Monday and the snow was melting as of Monday afternoon, giving workers some relief as they tackled the massive recovery effort.

Like the interior of the flower shop, the homes of West Liberty showed the bizarre random nature of tornadoes -- some destroyed, some untouched. In front of a West Liberty house that had been undamaged, children were building a snowman.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said on Sunday the storm had caused at least $5.8 million in property damage. He described the scene in West Liberty as "total devastation" and signed an executive order barring price gouging for food and other necessities.

Reports of looting began to surface late Friday, according to the Kentucky State Police, though the situation is now under control. As recently as Sunday afternoon, police stopped a vehicle on a back road that was trying to leave a home with a load full of stolen copper, said Albert Hale, the emergency manager for Laurel County.

The opportunity for looters is clearly visible -- even from a busy highway drivers can view destroyed homes where items such as televisions sit unattended. Hale estimated that seven miles worth of damaged homes need to be monitored. In hard-hit areas, officials stopped drivers to make sure they had a good reason to be in the area.

The extra security means Tracy Pitman in Laurel County, Kentucky does not have to worry about thieves while sitting in her small recreational vehicle with her grandson.

For her, the bigger concern is planning the Wednesday funeral for her father-in-law and mother-in-law, both killed Friday during the storm. The family is planning to create a cemetery behind the spot where the family's homes used to stand.

"That's the way our parents wanted it to be," Pitman said.

The violent storms raised fears that 2012 would be another bad year for tornadoes after 550 deaths in the United States were blamed on twisters last year, the deadliest year in nearly a century, according to the National Weather Service.

AccuWeather.com reported that Friday's storms may be one of the worst tornado outbreaks for early March on record, with 80 sightings between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

March and April are typically busy months for tornadoes, and it is difficult to predict how bad the rest of the tornado season would be, according to Greg Carbin, warning coordination meteorologist, NOAA's National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center.

Demi Lovato's Music Reflects Her 'Open Heart'

'It's nice being able to tell the truth,' Lovato says of Unbroken and her 'Stay Strong' documentary, which debuts tonight at 10 p.m. on MTV.

Demi Lovato is no stranger to being honest about her ups and downs. When she dropped Unbroken last fall, several of the cuts, including the album's staggering lead single, "Skyscraper," seemed to reflect on her own personal journey.

Recorded after she left a treatment center in 2011, the album was full of not only girl-power anthems, but also reflective ballads about the struggles of loving both yourself and others.

"The album I wanted to keep upbeat and uplifting; I didn't want to come out with this depressing album. I think it's important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues," she told MTV News about the release before tonight's premiere of her MTV documentary, "Stay Strong," which also touches on many of her personal issues and trying her best to put her life back together after entering rehab in October 2010. "But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy," she added about the album.

Whereas some pop stars tend to shy away from their own lives on their albums, Lovato fully embraced the joys and the sorrows of her life. "I think it's nice being able to tell the truth and being able to really talk about these issues rather than hiding it and not talking about it and sharing it," she added. "So I think I enjoy it more than anything I'd done before when I was trying to hide everything." The album's next single is "Give Your Heart a Break."

Lovato is set to welcome fans into her life when "Stay Strong" debuts tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV followed by a live Q&A with the star during "The After Show" at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

"I've just been working at it a day at a time and have been trying to continue to fight my hardest," she told us about still dealing with her problems in the public eye. "And I've had my ups and downs, and I'm still trying, but overall it's been a really great journey, and I'm thankful for everything that I've been through."

Mess For Less: DIY Birdhouse - Guest Post from Dwell on Joy

My kids just love the outdoors. There is something about being out in the cool air that calms them and brings us closer to nature. Do your kids feel the same way? I am excited to be sharing a project for a DIY birdhouse for all you outdoor loving folks from Sarah at Dwell on Joy. Sarah is a mom of three boys and blogs about food, crafts, home and family. The winter here up north has been anything but normal. That's a good thing!

But with warmer temps, its got me thinking about the birds! We have a cherry blossom tree next to our deck that is jam packed with our feathered friends in the spring. Not to mention the gorgeous blooms! {Maybe that's why the birds like it so much!} We put a birdhouse out there last year, but I was told it was too late for the birds to take up residence. Don't worry though, there is a happy ending to that store at the bottom of my post.

So this year, we are prepared! ?A got a new assemble-yourself-birdhouse-kit for Christmas and we are gonna get that thing out there BEFORE the birds start nesting, wink wink!

You will need:

a wooden birdhouse

*They are sold at any craft store pre-assembled. Ours is from Fleet Farm {brand: Timber Tots Wooden Castle} and is much more sturdy than the craft store version because it's held together by screws.

acrylic paints

paintbrushes

Mod Podge or clear coat sealer spray paint

2 loop screws {screws with the hole in the top}

chain or twine to hang on tree

First, assemble your birdhouse if that is the type you decided to purchase.
Mr. A is such a good helper! To be honest, we had to give each other a wrist break! Next we move onto painting! Where the creative juices flow...............
We actually had a paint party! T worked on his pinewood derby car. My youngest son unfortunately {for him} gets to run all the errands with me while the older two are at school. ?We went to the craft store this morning for other supplies and so I let him pick out a wooden craft to paint this afternoon. Of all that he could pick, he chose a small wooden circle. Wouldn't that be nice if everyone was that easy to please!?!

Here are our projects during the paint phase:

We let our projects dry overnight and then sprayed them with a clear sealer product to protect their paint jobs. Especially the birdhouse. You will need to seal this to be sure the rain doesn't seep into the wood and rot all of your HARD WORK! After the sealer has dried, you will need to install the loop screws {just twist them into the wood} and chain so that you can adorn your favorite tree and hope the bird couples move in and make baby birds!
Once you hang the birdhouse you will need to use a?pliers?and squeeze the hooks closed so the wind doesn't blow your poor birds to the ground. {I would have photographed this except my hands were frozen solid after hanging it up.}

Doesn't it look cozy??? It's like a BIRDMANSION!

I almost forgot! I once read that you should have the birdhouse face into an open area so it's easy for them to get in and out. See, like this:
THE HAPPY ENDING!

Even though, last year, our birdhouse sat empty, the robins decided to move in underneath the deck! It was amazing watching them lay eggs {4 to be exact!}, hatch into babies {3 made it}, and then eventually leave the nest! Check them out! That's the mom on the left sitting on her eggs, and then the three "babies" on the right, right before they left the nest! Aren't they sweet :)

Just a thought here, i dont even know if we get napcar on our tv and certainly have not listened for it on the radio, but i do think you guys should send emails or phone calls letting the organization know your feelings. I know many of you feel this wont change a thing, but you live in a democracy and voicing your feelings to the powers that be is part of what makes it a democracy. Let that subside and soon you will live in a place like I came from where for more years than i was old when i left, the powers that be did as they liked.

If we want these terms to have longevity we gotta let them know we aint gonna lie down and accept them expiring. If we dont show we care they will think they can get away with it all the time.
