Why do some men get grouchier as they age?

Some call it ?grumpy old man complex.? Other experts label it: ?irritable male syndrome,? a spike in the outward crankiness of guys of a certain age. As more baby boomers hit 60? be ready for more grouchy outbursts, like a Donald Trump rant set to explode.

How to set goals with children - Kumon

At this time of year, many adults will be making resolutions for the year ahead. A New Year is often seen as the ideal time for a fresh start and an opportunity to better one?s self. January 1st comes with great optimism and a chance to see room for improvement.

Goal setting with children

Goal setting with your children is a great opportunity to hear about what is important to them

These are valuable ideas for self-development, and ones which are beneficial for our children to learn. So this New Year, why not encourage your children to come up with realistic, achievable resolutions of their own?

To do this, it will be necessary for your children to understand the concept of goal setting, a skill which we can help our children develop. Here are a few tips for helping your children set meaningful goals for 2013.

Share your goals and be a role model
A great way to teach your children about goal writing is to model the practice yourself. Take the time to explain your own goals with your children; discuss how you identified these goals, the actions you will take and the evidence that will indicate you have reached them. It goes without saying that your child will observe your actions throughout the year so ensure they witness you striving to achieve your goals too!

Help them to write their own goals
Having shared your own goals, encourage your child to write a few of their own. Remind them that meaningful goals should be simple and specific, as well as measurable, to give them an opportunity to feel a sense of achievement when they reach them.

A goal should also be something your child has considerable control over, and not about what they want other people to achieve. Goals should also be time-bound so ensure your child considers when they want to achieve it by. This will often not be a case of the sooner the better, but rather a reasonable time-frame that will motivate them to achieve their goal within their own set period of time.

Listen and encourage
Goal setting with your children is a great opportunity to hear about their dreams and what is important to them. Ensure you make the most of this opportunity to listen to what they are saying and encourage them to mould these into achievable goals. Some dreams may not be achievable in full but you may be able to break down their intentions into smaller steps together rather than writing them off.

Write them down together
It is often said that you are much more likely to achieve a target if you write it down and share it with others. Once you and your child have discussed your goals and action plans, write them down and display them somewhere that you will both view often. You can then encourage each other to keep to your action plans and not allow busy lives to get in the way of bringing targets to completion.

So, make the most of this opportunity to listen to your child?s hopes and desires and make a plan that can bring those desires to life. At Kumon we believe there is always room for growth and improvement and the New Year is the ideal time to make a fresh start and realise the potential of both your child and yourself.

Couple loses adoptive daughter after Russia signs ban

After a roller coaster week, Kendra Skaggs sat down to vent on her blog. She had used that space to document her 13 month journey of adopting a young girl named Polina from Russia. But now, with that dream just weeks away from fulfillment, she described her frustration, fear and anger as she watched it being snatched away.

"I have no control. I'm on the other side of the world and I can't hold and comfort my daughter as I wait to hear if we will forever be separated," she wrote in a passionate entry

Her writing seemed to speak for hundreds of American parents whose hopes of adopting a Russian orphan were dashed today when Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a controversial ban on adoptions to the United States. The move is part of Russia's retaliation for a set of human rights sanctions passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Obama earlier this month. Critics, including the U.S. State Department, say the adoption ban is playing politics with the lives of children.

Russia is the third most popular country for Americans to adopt from, but in recent years the issue has become a political football in Russia. Americans have adopted over 60,000 Russian children since the fall of the Soviet Union, but Russian officials have seized on the cases of 19 children who died after being adopted by Americans.

In 2010, a 7-year-old adopted boy named Artyom was put on a plane back to Russia alone by his adoptive mother from Tennessee with little more than a note saying she did not want him anymore. The case touched off a wave of fury in Russia and adoptions to the United States were nearly halted.

The Many Adventures of Vladimir Putin

Just a week ago Kendra and her husband visited Polina at her orphanage outside Moscow. The bubbly 5-year-old suffers from spina bifida, a condition that has left her numb from the waist down and unable to walk. They showed Polina photos of her new bedroom and told her about her new family. They played together, hugged each other, and promised to see each other soon when they returned in January to bring her home to Arkansas.

The adoption ban legislation, meanwhile, had just been introduced by Russian lawmakers. Kendra had hoped their case, which was nearly completed, would sneak in under the wire. She held out hope again after a Moscow court approved her adoption on Monday. All that was needed was a 30 day waiting period before they could bring Polina home.

It appears even that was too late. The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, but Russian officials have said even cases of 52 children who are within weeks of traveling to the United States are now frozen. Authorities have pledged to find new homes for them in Russia.

For the Skaggs family, it is agonizing to be so close to bringing her home, yet so far. Kendra fears Polina will think she was abandoned again.

"It's the fear of what she is going to think, that we forgot her," she said in an interview with ABC News.

"She's out there and I can't take care of her," she said, crying softly. "I can't help her. I can't tell her I love her. So it's really hard."

She also worries what will happen to Polina in Russia, a country with scarce accommodations for the handicapped.

"Russia really isn't set up for people with disabilities. You can't get into the metro even to get around because it's just levels and levels of stairs that you have to go up and down and there's no handicapped access to the buildings," Kendra said.

Putin's Adoption Ban Breaks Kendra Skaggs' Heart

Hundreds of thousands of children languish in what are often described as Russia's under-resourced orphanages. Many of them, like Polina, have special needs, which is one of the reasons they may have been given up at birth. Often those children face an uncertain future once they leave the orphanage system when they turn 18.

Kendra described Polina as a fiercely independent, intelligent, and determined young girl.

"She's very loving, very kind. She loves to sing and dance to music and listen to the music," she said.

In a home video that Kendra and her husband took with their cell phones, a beaming Polina proudly counts to 10 in English. In another she waves hello to her new grandparents. An overjoyed look envelops her face as she realizes that she will soon have grandparents. In another she tells Kendra she loves her.

With no way of contacting Polina, Kendra said she wishes she could send her a simple message.

"I would tell her we love her and to be strong and that were going to do everything we can to come back and get her. Everything that's in our power. We want to bring her home with us and have her to be our daughter," she said.

"I'd give anything to go see her and just wrap her in my arms and tell her I love her and to bring her home," she said.

At the end of their last visit, Kendra, mindful of the pending legislation, broke down in tears as she said goodbye. This time it was Polina who comforted her.

"Don't cry mommy, be strong,'" she said.

Jean Harris, 'Scarsdale Diet' doctor killer, dies

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Jean Harris, the patrician girls' school headmistress who spent 12 years in prison for the 1980 killing of her longtime lover, "Scarsdale Diet" doctor Herman Tarnower, in a case that rallied feminists and inspired television movies, has died. She was 89.

Harris died Sunday at an assisted-living facility in New Haven, her son, James Harris, said Friday.

She had claimed the shooting of Tarnower, 69, was an accident. Convicted of murder in 1981, Harris suffered two heart attacks while serving her sentence in the Bedford Hills women's prison north of New York City. She was granted clemency by then-Gov. Mario Cuomo when she underwent heart bypass surgery in December 1992 and was released on parole three weeks later.

She later founded Children of Bedford Inc., a nonprofit organization to provide scholarships and tutoring for children of female prison inmates.

Her trial for shooting Tarnower, the millionaire cardiologist famous for devising the Scarsdale Diet ? a weight-loss book and sensation of the 1970s named for the New York suburb where he practiced ? brought feminists rallying to her defense.

They pictured her as a woman victimized by a male-dominated society, adrift because she was getting older and her lover of 14 years was brushing her off in favor of his younger office assistant. In addition, they said, she was in the thrall of antidepressant drugs Tarnower had prescribed for her.

The case inspired two made-for-television movies, "The People vs. Jean Harris," which aired not long after her 1981 conviction, and "Mrs. Harris," which ran on HBO in 2006.

Harris always maintained that she went armed to Tarnower's Westchester County estate in Purchase on March 10, 1980, to confront him over his womanizing and kill herself, but unintentionally shot him four times in a struggle over the gun. She later acknowledged at a parole hearing that she was "certainly guilty of something. I caused the man's death."

A jury convicted her of murder, and she was sentenced to 15 years to life.

Her lawyer had unsuccessfully gambled on an all-or-nothing strategy that eschewed an "extreme emotional disturbance" defense and did not allow the jury to consider a lesser charge such as manslaughter.

Jurors said afterward it was Harris's own testimony that led them to convict her. They said they tried to re-enact her account of the struggle for the gun and did not find it credible.

The defense maintained that jealousy was not a factor. But during cross-examination, the prosecutor introduced a letter written just prior to the shooting in which Harris referred to her rival as an "ignorant slut" and "a vicious, adulterous psychotic."

"The fact was, Jean Harris was too much of a lady to admit that she was jealous of the office girl," the late author Shana Alexander wrote in her book about the case, "Very Much a Lady." ''She would rather go to prison than acknowledge it. And she did."

As an inmate, Harris criticized authority, chafing under what she saw as arbitrary, counterproductive rules. In books and articles she wrote and in interviews, she advocated reform, both for her own benefit and that of other imprisoned women.

Housed in the prison's honor wing, she taught mothering skills to expectant inmates and worked in the Bedford Hills children's center.

Born Jean Streuven on April 27, 1923, she grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, attended private schools, graduated magna cum laude from Smith College and married industrialist James Harris.

The couple lived in Grosse Pointe, Mich., and had two sons. Harris also got her first job there, teaching first grade.

She and James Harris divorced in 1966. A few months later, the slender, blond, blue-eyed divorcee of 43 met Tarnower, 12 years her senior, at a party on Park Avenue in New York. They talked about marriage early in the relationship, but that never panned out, and Harris remained his lover.

In 1977, she left a sales administration job in New York to become headmistress of the Madeira School for girls in the Washington suburb of McLean, Va., a position that also got her listed in the capital's social register.

Weekends and vacations were spent with Tarnower, traveling or on his arm at social gatherings. She also earned a mention in the acknowledgments in his best-selling diet book, "The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet," for helping with research.

But Tarnower's dalliances with other, younger women drove Harris to desperation, and, according to her account, she decided to drive from Virginia to his home and kill herself in his presence.

She testified at her trial: "In Westchester, I always felt I was a woman in a pretty dress that went to dinner parties with Dr. Tarnower. In Washington, I was a woman in a pretty dress and a headmistress. I wasn't sure who I was, and it didn't seem to matter."

The expensively dressed Harris came across as snobbish, arrogant and jealous of the younger woman who had replaced her as the principal object of Tarnower's attention.

During the trial, it was assumed that Harris insisted on testifying about the fateful last meeting in Tarnower's bedroom. She later said she would not have taken the stand had her lawyer told her to "keep quiet."

Medical services multiply throughout the region :: The Valley News

Thursday, December 27th, 2012
Issue 52, Volume 16.

The pace of medical advances and health care availability has seemingly outpaced other service sectors throughout the region in recent years. That surge is expected to continue next year.

Temecula?s first hospital is slated to open in the fall. Services at Murrieta?s first hospital are expanding following the recent opening of a neonatal intensive care unit there. New cardiology techniques and other services will continue to unfold at Murrieta?s second hospital. A 53-acre parcel east of Interstate 15 on the boundary of Temecula and Murrieta is being eyed as a potential site of a Kaiser Permanente hospital and medical complex. And Fallbrook Hospital?s emergence from a contract dispute with a medical group has opened the door for expanded services there.

The projects and new medical offerings are transforming a region that was widely seen as lacking enough hospital beds and key specialty services.

Next year, a second birthday will be celebrated at Loma Linda University, which opened a $230 million complex in Murrieta that is anchored by an emergency room and a five-story, 265,000-square-foot hospital. That hospital, which overlooks Interstate 215, sprouted over a 26-month period that netted Murrieta its second hospital.

Since it opened, Loma Linda Murrieta has brought open heart surgery to the region and introduced new cancer and childbirth strategies. It has also added specialized wound care and bariatric surgery to its offerings.

"We are making plans for expanding our cardiology services and will have some important news to announce in January," said Kathryn Stiles, the hospital?s director of marketing and communication.

As services expand there, Temecula?s first hospital is taking shape at the city?s southeast corner. Southwest Advertisement

Healthcare System is building the 140-bed, five-story hospital that is more than 60 percent finished. The hospital is expected to cost the parent company, Pennsylvania-based Universal Health Services, about $150 million when it opens next fall.

Work progressed there as Southwest joined forces with Rady Children?s Hospital-San Diego to open the first neonatal care unit in the Temecula Valley. That 11-bed unit ? the first in a vast area from Escondido to Orange County ? recently opened at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta. The neonatal unit is located in a $53 million annex that opened alongside Rancho Springs in February 2011.

Meanwhile, Fallbrook?Hospital, which has been serving the region for more than 50 years, is moving forward with its commitment to provide a growing list of specialty services and surgical options.

The facility?s emergency room, deemed critical for residents in the northern tip of San Diego County, continues to help patients avoid an emergency out-of-town transport as they grapple with threatening health conditions.

The hospital is emerging from a breakdown in communications that occurred during its contract renewal negotiations with Graybill Medical, one of the town?s largest medical groups. After a few stressful months, a new agreement was forged between the two in order to continue providing local hospital services for patients using that group.

Stephen Abbott, president of the Fallbrook Healthcare District said the new agreement was critical in order to deliver quality healthcare services to area residents.

"We are fortunate to have easy, local access to 24-hour emergency services at Fallbrook Hospital along with a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment services," Abbott said.
