Aspirin shown to fight prostate cancer | WIVB.com

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Aspirin could be a lifeline for men who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer.

We've long known that aspirin can lower the risk of developing cancer, but what about people who already have cancer? A new report looked at men who were treated for prostate cancer, either by surgery or radiation. The study included almost 2,000 men, and, of those who were followed for 10 years, the ones who took aspirin had a 57 percent reduction in their death rate from the cancer.

Dr. Thomas Schwaab of Roswell Park said, "This study looked at all kinds of anticoagulants that could be taken; whether it's aspirin, heparin, and a number of other agents, and the one that seemed to have the highest and most protective effect was aspirin, indeed."

Prostate cancers have different degrees of aggressiveness, and we can predict their behavior by their appearance under the microscope. The benefit of aspirin was greatest for the most aggressive "high risk" cancers, producing an almost 80 percent lowering of the death rate.

"I don't think the majority of physicians who treat prostate cancer really tell their patients to start taking an aspirin as an anti-cancer effect," Dr. Schwaab noted.

But perhaps they should. Dr. Schwaab is a urologist and immunologist, and he's working on anti-cancer vaccines at Roswell Park. Aspirin may become part of the treatments being developed.

"If you now give aspirin to a patient, you're actually improving the immune status. So to kind of fast forward a few years, you could even imagine that aspirin is given together with some anti-cancer vaccines," he said.

Sony Mobile Team Up with Foxconn to Produce Sub-US$200 Smartphone for Chinese Market
Untitled-1

According to industry sources, Sony Mobile Communications will teamed up with Foxconn, and other Taiwanese manufactures to venture into the sub-US$200 smartphone segment. The vendor has launched its entry-level Android phone Xperia Tipo outsourced to Foxconn, with other comparable models manufactured by Arima and Compal to be rolled out in the first half of 2013. While Sony expects shipments of each entry-level smartphone to reach several million units, sources at Taiwan-based ODMs indicated that shipment volumes for each model may be lower than expected due to over diversified product lineups and marketing efforts ?

Sony Mobile has launched over 10 models of its Xperia lineup so far in 2012 targeting medium-range to high-end segments, and the launch of sub-US$200 models aims to tap the entry-level segment. Sony Mobile shipped 7.4 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2012 and has seen its share in the US and China continue to decline, and the company is not doing so well in their home-ground market. Sony Mobile currently accounts for only 8 percent of the smartphone market in Japan, trailing after Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu and NEC.

Sony Mobile expects more growth in China.

China?s smartphone market is expected to serve as a promising place for the newly formed Sony Mobile Communications despite growing competition. Sony Ericsson was renamed Sony Mobile Communications after the Japanese entertainment giant Sony Corp finalized its divorce with Swedish mobile network giant Ericsson in February. The business is extremely competitive in the Chinese market, with both domestic and overseas smartphone makers battling for a bigger slice of the promising market. Phones sold at 1,000-2,000 yuan (US$156-US$312) have most of the market share in China, local phone makers have the biggest advantages in this price range. International brand need to have cheaper smartphones in order to compete in China.

Is Innovation the Most Abused Word In Business?

In my opinion, an innovation is something that no one thought of before and that performs better than its predecessors. It is not a synonym for invention or discovery. Take graphene for example. People had been working with it in various forms (usually called "exfoliated graphite") for decades because it has all the interesting properties of graphite, but with an enormous surface-area to volume ratio. Theorists predicted interesting properties in single, isolated sheets of graphite, and there was some evidence to support it, but nothing really came of it. Then someone got the idea to use scotch tape to rip off a few layers of graphene from bulk graphite, which eventually lead to a Nobel prize. The innovation wasn't the scotch tape, or the graphene, or even using scotch tape to exfoliate a laminar material; it was using scotch tape to exfoliate graphite.

That one little innovation allowed all kinds of measurements that validated the intriguing properties of graphene and sparked a deluge of research across the physical sciences. Now, let's contrast it to something like the iPhone. Was that an innovation? I say no. Everyone had thought of the smartphone already--they were just waiting for the technology to catch up to expectation. People were using proto-iPads to keep track of stock trades decades [npr.org] before the iPod existed.

I think that in the business world, success is equivalent to money and innovation drives success, therefore anything that makes money is innovative. And since things that make money are generally popular, they use the word "innovation" to describe creating something that is popular, which essentially boils down to having the right idea or product and the right time. Thus Apple--which makes very popular, well-designed products--has become synonymous with innovation. I'm not knocking Apple; convincing people to enter their credit card information in order to use a device that they already bought is pure genius. But what have they done that is really de novo, that was more than just clever or marketed effectively?

Norway: World's First LNG Powered Cargo Ship ... - LNG World News

World's First LNG Powered Cargo Ship Launched

The ship was called ?a world sensation? when it entered into service recently. Why? It is the world?s first natural gas-powered cargo ship!

The ship naming ceremony of MS ?H?ydal? took place at the BioMar quay at in Vester?len in Nordland county, Northern Norway.

?You have today received a worldwide sensation to your village,? said the godmother Erna Solberg, who is leader of the conservative party in Norway. ?MS ?H?ydal? manifests the desire to do something new and to be in front. Local capital and local forces behind have dared to take new steps.?

Reduces emissions dramatically

MS ?H?ydal? runs on liquefied natural gas, known as LNG, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as nitrogen oxides and CO2 significantly. The freighter will carry commercial fish feedstock from the BioMar factory at Myre in Vester?len to fish farms along the Norwegian coast.

MS ?H?ydal? has already been operating along the coast for a month. The newbuilding cost was about NOK 200 million.

About the ship

The ship is owned by the company NSK Shipping AS, who is a key transport partner of BioMar. BioMar started a cooperation with ship designer NSK Design Ltd three years ago. The goal was to develop a new and environmentally friendly ship design for transportation of fish feedstock. Apparently they have succeeded.

The approximately 70 meters long and 16 meters wide ship was built by the Turkish shipyard Tersan in Istanbul. It is classified by the Norwegian Veritas, DNV.

MS ?H?ydal has a capacity of 2,000 tonnes of bulk cargo. On board there is a crane with 50 ton lifting capacity.

The LNG fuel tank is approximately 90 cubic meters ? sufficient for one week?s operation. Rolls Royce has provided LNG engines and the ship propulsion system. The ship?s speed is 14 knots.

The new ship represents 90 percent reduction in NOx emissions and 25 percent reduction in CO2 compared to conventional diesel.

?The Norwegian coast is vulnerable. Natural gas powered cargo ships reduce emissions of greenhouse gases significantly and show the way forward for both transport and aquaculture. In addition it eliminates the risk of contamination from heavy fuel oil by accident. The whole concept of larger vessels, better maneuverability and gas fuel is an important contribution from BioMar to the develop aquaculture in the right direction with a prime focus on sustainability,? says sales director Per Kristian Nordoy, BioMar.

Low-cal longevity questioned

Limiting food intake in monkeys fails to extend survival

Web edition : 6:05 pm

Decades of research have linked low-calorie diets with extended survival, but a new report finds that rhesus monkeys on strict diets don?t live longer than their counterparts getting a standard diet.

The findings, reported August 29 in Nature, run counter to a 2009 study from the University of Wisconsin?Madison that showed a clear survival advantage in a calorie-restricted group of similar rhesus monkeys. Scientists suspect that differences in the two studies? designs might explain the discordant findings, leaving the question of longevity still dangling.

Both research groups will need to wait another decade or more before all the monkeys live out their lives. But the authors of the new study, conducted at a National Institute on Aging laboratory in Baltimore, say their data are unlikely to change, since calculations show that the chance of a survival difference arising in the remaining monkeys is exceedingly low.

?I don?t think one study overturns 75 years of research,? says Steven Austad, a bio-gerontologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who isn?t part of either study team. But he notes that most previous calorie-restriction studies have been done in short-lived animals. ?It?s always been possible that whatever you used to increase their lives might not work the same in long-lived animals.?

The median life span for a rhesus monkey in captivity is about 27 years, but some can reach age 40, says study coauthor Julie Mattison, a physiologist at the aging institute. The NIA study includes 121 monkeys, divided between calorie-restricted and standard-diet groups. Some monkeys were put on one diet or the other when they were already well into middle age. Others started on the regimen earlier in life, some very young.

Now, 23 years into the study, more than half of the monkeys have died and no survival advantage shows up from calorie restriction, the scientists report. The team considered only aging-related deaths attributable to causes such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The calorie-restricted monkeys in the NIA study get about 25 to 30 percent fewer calories per day than normal, Mattison says. But she acknowledges that the control diet might also slightly underfeed the monkeys ? by perhaps 5 to 10 percent fewer calories. ?It may very well be that slight calorie restriction in the control animals, plus a nutritionally balanced diet,? limits the survival difference between the groups, Mattison says.

The Wisconsin study control monkeys get more food than the NIA controls ? a standard diet plus 20 extra grams of chow per day to eat as they wish. The NIA monkeys, on calorie restriction or not, get a variety of foods, whereas the Wisconsin monkeys all get standardized pellets. While both approaches provide essential nutrients and the same percentages of carbohydrates in the diet, the NIA monkeys get less sugar than the Wisconsin animals do.

?We don?t know what that difference really means yet,? says Ricki Colman, a biological anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin. ?Those are the kinds of things we will be looking at when we go through our data.? Austad observes that the NIA control monkeys weighed less and had less diabetes than the Wisconsin controls.

Looking beyond longevity, the value of calorie restriction ? in any species ? might lie in overall health, not just racking up years, Colman says.

Mattison agrees, noting that while the new study didn?t show a survival advantage from fewer calories, it did offer hints of a better life. None of the monkeys that were started on calorie restriction early on has developed cancer, she notes, compared with six monkeys in the standard-diet group.

But calorie restriction very early in life may come with risk. Some monkeys started very early on calorie restriction developed diabetes, even though they are far from obese, she says, and some show signs that their immune systems might not be as good as those in the control animals.

?Science thrives when people get a result they don?t expect,? Austad says. ?This study is going to provoke a lot of useful discussion.?

Attacks in Iraq kill general and 4 others

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say a one-star general is among five security officials who killed in a series of attacks.

Police said Brig. Gen. Nadhum Tayeh was driving to work early Wednesday when a carload of gunmen opened fire on him in Baghdad.

Hours later, authorities said an off-duty army colonel was killed in a roadside bombing in northern Baghdad. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity in both cases because they were not authorized to release the information.

The deadliest attack of the day came in the city of Kirkuk, where three policemen were killed and six wounded. City police Cmdr. Sarhad Qadir said their convoy hit another roadside bomb.

Kirkuk is 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

Security forces are a top target for insurgents seeking to destabilize Iraq.

Boeing tests CST-100 parachute protector

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Boeing Company recently completed a jettison test of its forward heat shield, which will protect the parachutes of the company's CST-100 spacecraft during future missions to and from low Earth orbit. The forward heat shield jettison will start the parachute deployment sequence and provide a safe landing for the capsule and its crew members. The test was part of Boeing's work supporting its funded Space Act Agreement (SAA) with NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP) during Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2).

"Without the parachutes, the crew wouldn't survive landing. We need to slow them down to a safe landing velocity," said Mike Burghardt, director of Spacecraft Development for Boeing's CST-100. "It is key to be able to get that forward heat shield released at the right time so we can deploy the parachutes."

Testing of the composite-based forward heat shield took place at Bigelow Aerospace's headquarters outside of Las Vegas on June 5, 7 and 11. Surrounded by dry mountain air, Burghardt and his team set up a series of high-speed and high-definition cameras to capture the shield's deployment, a sequence that begins with four piston-like thrusters firing at an altitude of between 20,000 and 30,000 feet. Once the thrusters fire, they are designed to push the shield out of the way of the spacecraft, allowing the drogue parachute to deploy to stabilize the descending crew module followed by the three main parachutes.

During the test, accelerometers and strain gauges measured the shocks and loads that were transmitted during the deployment sequence. The team also tested the ability to jettison the forward heat shield if one of the thrusters were to fail. The thrusters connect to the forward heat shield using breakaway joints, which are designed to fail if one of the thrusters did not fire during re-entry.

"The joint is designed so it won't break when exposed to nominal loads. However, if we did have a thruster failure case, the joint would break to allow the heat shield to be jettisoned from the spacecraft," Burghardt said.

The shield is an adaptation of what Boeing used for its Apollo moon capsules and is similar to the design NASA's Orion spacecraft will use for human exploration missions to deep space.

In March 2011, the agency signed a $92.3 million SAA with the company for the continued development of its Crew Space Transportation (CST), which is a reusable, capsule-shaped spacecraft designed to carry up to seven people, or a combination of people and cargo to low Earth orbit. Optional milestones valued at $20.6 million also were approved and will be completed later this year.

Boeing also tested the CST-100 service module propellant tanks on July 2 to make sure they can handle the extreme requirements of a launch abort scenario.

"The earlier you can do testing and the more testing you do accelerates what you learn," Burghardt said. "There's nothing like building something and then going to test it to find something you didn't think you knew about or you didn't remember."

Boeing will have the opportunity to conduct more testing on its CST-100 during NASA's Commercial Crew Integrated Capability (CCiCap) phase, which began earlier this month with three American companies that are advancing integrated spacecraft and launch vehicle designs. Boeing partnered with United Launch Alliance to integrate its capsule with an Atlas V rocket for launches to complete its integrated Commercial Crew Transportation System. CCiCap will set the stage for a crewed orbital demonstration mission in 2016, the start of operations that will lead to providing commercial transportation services to the agency to send crews to the International Space Station.

Have Your Gums Checked, Seek Advice From A Periodontist Seattle ...

It?s significant to speak with a periodontist Seattle as well as cure periodontal disorders as early as possible. Ongoing research suggests that gum problems may be linked to heart ailment, brittle bones, osteopenia, high anxiety, or being diabetic. The bacterias connected with gum problems can go into the blood vessels as well as present a danger to the rest of the body. Good gums may lead to a much healthier body. Facts suggests having a history of gum condition makes you six times more prone to have future periodontal issues. Gum disorder is usually silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until an advanced phase of the disease.

Around 50 percent of grown ups in America have some sort of periodontal condition, and gingivitis is among the most common. It would be more recommended to find ways in stopping gingivitis from even existing. This could be simply achieved by making sure that you practice hygienic dental actions. As soon as you assure yourself that you clean your teeth regularly, or you use dental floss every now and then, as well as staying away from food products which are too spicy or salty, then you would not experience this cumbersome dental problem. In case your gums are reddish or inflammed, or if they bleed very easily when you clean and floss your teeth, you might have gum disease. If you?ve got gingivitis, your bleeding and inflammed gums are due to a buildup of bacteria around your gums as well as between your teeth.

Gingivitis is rarely painful when it first develops, hence it is important to examine your teeth and gums daily while flossing in order to look for premature signs of problems. Take a look at your gum color. Gums in the early stages of gingivitis might look dull and reddish instead of bright and pink. Check your toothbrush. If you notice pink on the bristles, your gums may be bleeding from the slight pressure of tooth brushing, which might indicate the initial stages of an infection. Take a look at your gum consistency. Gums in the initial stages of gingivitis might appear soft as well as inflammed. Healthy gums must be rather firm and they must not be pulling away from the teeth.

Do not forget to go to your dentist office for expert examination on the condition of your mouth even though you decide to go the natural way to minister to your gum issues. They still know what?s best when it comes to dental care. Do not ignore symptoms of gingivitis so as not to be facing a bigger problem of periodontitis. Being proactive in taking proper care of your teeth and gums is going to prove to go a long way in preventing periodontal problems.

If you don?t visit a periodontist Seattle and get treatment for gingivitis, your gums might start to pull away from your teeth, leaving small pockets. These openings trap plaque that you are unable to reach with a toothbrush. As time passes, the plaque will harden to become tartar. Plaque and tartar build-up can cause further irritation, that may gradually spread to the bone structures around your teeth. As time goes on, the pockets could get much deeper and much more difficult to clean, and your gum as well as bone might shrink. This is known as periodontitis.

Speak with a periodontist Seattle for a diagnosis of your gum concerns. Your gum and bone tissue must fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck. If you have gum disorder, this supporting tissue as well as bone will be destroyed, creating ?pockets? around the teeth. As time passes, these openings will become much deeper, providing a larger space for bacteria to thrive and create destruction. As bacterias build up and advance under the gum tissue in these deep pockets, further bone as well as tissue damage follow. Ultimately, when an excessive amount of bone will be lost, the teeth would need to be removed.

Each individual may feel signs and symptoms differently. Signs and symptoms may include reddish, swollen, tender gums, bleeding while brushing and/or flossing, shrinking gums, a change in bite as well as jaw alignment, loose or separating teeth. Those with periodontal issues have chronic odorous breath and their false teeth might no longer fit. There may likewise be pus between the teeth and gums. The signs and symptoms of periodontal problems might resemble other issues or health-related problems.

The gingival architecture plays a crucial role in the advancement of proper tooth size, shape, as well as tooth-to-tooth proportion. A precise perception of the hard- as well as soft-tissue physiology, and the way they relate to restorative procedures, is vital in making anterior dental aesthetics. A multidisciplinary strategy is frequently needed to obtain best results. The functional as well as aesthetic requirements of restorative dentistry direct the periodontal aspect of treatment. Optimal visual restorative results can be done by conducting sophisticated periodontal treatments. Clinical crown extending surgical treatment could shape a hard-tissue foundation that will support a natural appearance in the soft-tissue architecture. Additionally, clinical crown extending will give sufficient amounts of tooth structure for great tooth preparation as well as restoration. This is essential, because of the adverse effects of improper placement of restorative margins and violation of biologic width.

Most crown extending treatments involve local anesthesia. More time will be required in case several teeth are being treated. It will also take longer in case bone must be extracted in addition to gum tissue. Because crown lengthening involves changing the shape of the gums, nearby teeth would likewise be affected by the treatment. In many instances, your periodontist is going to try to reshape the gums as gradually as possible. Typically, in case you already have temporary crowns, they are going to be extracted prior to reshaping the gums, and then replaced upon completion.

At the beginning of the procedure, your periodontist Seattle will cut into the gum, as well as pull it away from the teeth. Once the bone and tooth roots are exposed, your periodontist will make a decision if it is necessary to extract a few of the bone. If your periodontist could get by with removing a bit of gum tissue, he would most likely place a temporary crown over the tooth. After washing the area with sterile saline, your gums will be stitched back together. In some instances, your periodontist may likewise put a bandage over the surgical area. For a lot of men and women, it takes about ninety days for your mouth to heal. As soon as the area is all set for further work, your periodontist will make a second temporary crown to fit the extended tooth. Since your gums might continue to shrink throughout the recovery process, your periodontist is going to wait a bit before creating the permanent crown.

A Seattle area periodontal surgery is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal problems. Periodontists can likewise place dental implants in Seattle WA the area and perform cosmetic periodontal treatments.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Greetings from the aforementioned table at a sandwich shop outside the convention! (It?s called Inside the Box, in case anyone needs to track my movements or solve a mystery.) As I write, a resigned-looking film crew is filming the extremely minimal street traffic, probably because there?s a nice big road sign reading ?Tampa Street,? and if you can?t do reporting you can sure as heck do B-roll.

With so many official events canceled (by weak, spitting rain), I?m impressed by how many predictions you?re willing to make. Trying to figure out how the RNC will sell Romney in these conditions is like solving one of those bar trivia questions that only gives you one isolated clue before you start losing points??Wore a cape,? or ?not an Osmond,? or some such. The only sanctioned meetings I?ve been to were a morning breakfast for Iowa delegates and a late morning session of ?Newt University.?

The Iowa meeting was not, in any way, a Romney up-with-people party. Iowa gets 25 pledged delegates. Ron Paul supporters seized 21 of those slots during the lengthy, little-covered post-caucus process. You have to love the irony?one of the most important states in the GOP?s primary system, which brings hundreds and hundreds of national and international reporters in to cover its very important caucus, is mostly pledged to the guy who won?t win the nomination.

These delegates (as I?ve been writing) are very polite. They just don?t believe that Romney legitimately secured the nomination, and they think his RNC is stripping delegates from Paul without reason. Delegates from Maine, which has been altered from an all-Paul team to a half-Paul team, were given free entry to the breakfast out of solidarity. Paul himself tried to tamp down the bitterness, in his way. ?I really thought we were going to do well in Maine,? he said. But he thought back to the paraphrased/apocryphal conversation between Vo Nguyen Giap and an American who was admitting defeat in the Vietnam War. The general groused that Americans had never lost a battle. Giap pointed out that they lost the war anyway. Good analogy.

There was slightly more warmth toward Romney at Newt Gingrich?s ?Newt University? event?which has got to be the cleverest way of getting reporters to show up and cover the remarks of a guy who won two state primaries. A series of Newt-approved politicians talked up Romney?s Olympics experience in great detail, the kind of material you?d use if you were writing a flattering Forbes article about a businessman. Friendly, not braggy. Not negative, either. Romney?s youthful policy guru Lanhee Chen (Harvard class of 1999) went long on Romney?s ?energy independence by 2020? pledge, a much less bratty way of talking about the issue than the ?drill baby drill? slogan we all heard in 2008.

I guess that?s what I?m expecting. A biography spiel, told in video and personal stories, that gets granular about how terrific Romney really is. The smallest bones thrown to Romney?s defeated rivals. Will the Ron Paul people cause a ruckus? We?re all waiting for it (?we? being media who can only Instagram balloons and signs for so long). But Paul has pretty carefully walked the line between pissing off his delegates and pissing off Romney. Guns in Space, and How to Kill Our Sun [Video]

MinutePhysics showed us what would happen if the Earth were hollow, but that was just one part of the nerdy YouTube channel tag team this weekend. Here's the other half, wherein we learn how big a gun you'd need for the bullet to orbit the moon and hit you in the back of the head, and how to put out the Sun. (Please don't actually put out the Sun.) [YouTube] More »

How ocean currents affect global climate becoming better understood

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Florida State University oceanographer Kevin Speer has a "new paradigm" for describing how the world's oceans circulate -- and with it he may help reshape science's understanding of the processes by which wind, water, sunlight and other factors interact and influence the planet's climate.

A Florida State University professor of oceanography with a passion for teaching, Speer and a colleague recently published a significant paper in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Working with John Marshall, an oceanography professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Speer reviewed -- or essentially synthesized -- vast amounts of previous data on ocean circulation (including their own earlier papers). As a result, they have created what Speer calls a new paradigm in the study of ocean currents on a global scale.

Here's how it works: Basically, the oceans, together with the atmosphere, rebalance heat on the planet. The sun shines on Earth and heats up the tropics more than the poles. Near the poles, the ocean is cold and the water sinks; near the equator, the surface of the ocean is inviting and warm -- and floats on top of the colder deep water.

So the question is this: Where does the water that goes down come back up?

Speer, Marshall and other oceanographers now believe that it comes back up in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica -- not as much in the warm oceans as had been previously thought.

"We're not saying that nothing comes up in the rest of the World Ocean, just that the main thrust is in the Southern Ocean," Speer said. "To a large extent it's driven by the wind."

Very strong winds, to be precise.

In the rough waters around Antarctica, sailors call those winds the "Roaring Forties" and the "Furious Fifties." They originate near the Equator, where hot air rises and then is pushed toward the North and South poles by cooler air that rushes in to take its place.

The resulting "eddy-driven upwelling" in the Southern Ocean, as Speer characterizes it, may in fact describe the most important process to date that helps scientists understand the role of the ocean and climate.

Speer, who holds a doctorate in physical oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, spent years living in France as an oceanographic researcher for a French governmental agency. (Yes, he's fluent in French.)

Today, from his office on the Florida State campus, Speer serves as interim director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, a warren of intriguing laboratories just a few steps outside his door. It is there that Speer helps students and postdoctoral researchers learn about how climate works.

The laboratory's equipment includes a large, vintage rotating table designed nearly a half-century ago by the lab's founder, Florida State meteorology Professor Richard Pfeffer. (The device may be old, but it's one of the biggest and best in the United States, Speer says). Here students can recreate the ocean's churning and study natural phenomena such as the Antarctic circumpolar current.

Speer and his students have been studying ocean currents thanks to $2.5 million in funding from a larger $10 million National Science Foundation grant that FSU shares with eight other universities and institutions worldwide. Research has included releasing tracers and floats into the ocean to study the mixing and spreading of currents.

One of Speer's graduate students, Druv Balwada, recently took part in a joint U.S.-United Kingdom research program to study ocean currents aboard a ship in the Southern Ocean.

Why conventions are now about personalities, not policy

TAMPA, Fla. ? It?s one of the most memorable moments in convention history: Franklin D. Roosevelt telling a rapturous Democratic convention in 1932, ?Eleven years ago, I lost the use of my legs; for many days and nights, I questioned whether life was worth living. But, with the love and support of Eleanor, I learned to stand and walk again; and I believe with all my heart that America, now paralyzed by Depression and privation, will stand and walk again.?

You don?t remember that? Of course you don?t. FDR never would have put such a note in an acceptance speech. It wasn?t until Richard Nixon introduced the ?politics is personal? trope that the self-revealing anecdotes took hold. Now, try to find a convention acceptance speech without one.

Back in the day, the only personal touch in FDR?s 1932 address was when he acknowledged that he had broken with tradition by flying to Chicago to accept the nomination in person. He then went on to propose ?a New Deal for the American people.? (That?s the line everyone does remember.)

Nor did Dwight Eisenhower bring the 1952 GOP convention to a hushed silence by recalling the agonizing wait to learn if the D-Day invasion had succeeded, as he thought back to his childhood in Kansas and the values his parents taught him.

And you can read through John Kennedy?s 1960 acceptance speech without finding a single reference to his heroics in the Solomon Islands during World War II. However much his political career was aided by the story of his attempts to save his surviving crew in the sinking of the Patrol Torpedo boat PT-109, JFK had other goals in mind for this speech: Namely, to proclaim, ?We stand at the edge of a New Frontier.?

What?s so striking about these speeches is how anachronistic the absence of emotionally powerful narratives seems. In the modern acceptance speech, the personal is indeed the political; it has become as significant a part of the address as any statement of philosophy or policy. That?s why it?s a near-certainty that Governor Mitt Romney?s speech Thursday night?or at the very least his wife Ann?s speech Tuesday evening?will include a story about Romney?s childhood, or a challenge involving friends or family, designed to reveal a living, breathing human being with life experiences, hardships and even sorrows much like those voters face.? Just as likely, the candidate will cite by name a famer or factory worker or struggling working mom, to prove that he?s been touched by the people he?s met.

Fittingly, Richard Nixon began this practice with his 1952 ?Checkers? speech, which was the first to recognize the power of television to present (or misrepresent) a politician as an everyman.

And in his ?68 acceptance speech, Nixon went even further, making biography the climax of his oration, evoking the memory of a child:

"He hears the train go by at night and he dreams of far away places where he'd like to go?He?s helped on his journey through life [by] a father who had to go to work before he finished the sixth grade, sacrificed everything he had so that his sons could go to college. A gentle, Quaker mother, with a passionate concern for peace, quietly wept when he went to war but she understood why he had to go. ?And tonight he stands before you?nominated for President of the United States."

It was the first of many such evocations, all to say, ?I know what your life is like because it?s not that far from my own.?

George H.W. Bush, looking to erase the image of a blue-blood aristocrat, looked back during his 1988 speech to his younger days:

"We lived in a little shotgun house, one room for the three of us. Worked in the oil business, then started my own?. Moved from the shotgun, to a duplex apartment, to a house. And lived the dream?high school football on Friday night, Little League, neighborhood barbecue."

And then Bill Clinton struck a far more dramatic chord at the beginning of his 1992 address:

"I never met my father. He was killed in a car wreck on a rainy road three months before I was born, driving from Chicago to Arkansas to see my mother. After that, my mother had to support us. I can still see her clearly tonight through the eyes of a three-year-old, kneeling at the railroad station and weeping as she put me back on the train to Arkansas with my grandmother."

But no one had a more wrenching, riveting personal story than John McCain, whose speech in 2008 concluded with his story of imprisonment and torture in North Vietnam after he refused early release:

"After I turned down their offer, they worked me over harder than they ever had before, for a long time, and they broke me?I didn?t know how I could face my fellow prisoners. The good man in the cell next door to me, my friend, Bob Craner, saved me. Through taps on a wall, he told me I had fought as hard as I could. No man can always stand alone."

There is something discordant about a team of speechwriters and political operatives hammering away to create an image of the ?real, inner? candidate. And, to be blunt, there is no necessary connection between a moving life experience and the skills necessary for leadership. (Check out FDR?s track record as a parent.)

Still, there?s no getting around the reality: Our would-be leaders and their aides are convinced that without that personal, moving narrative they cannot forge that bond with voters. It would be refreshing if Romney were to say in his speech: ?I have lived a privileged life, one of wealth and comfort. But I know how to fix this broken economy?and that is what matters.? And Romney has, in fact, hinted that he may avoid the personal tales in favor of policy during his address.

It would be encouraging to believe that that train has not left the station. I know, because as a young boy, I heard that train whistle in the night, and?

Staff Training May Be A Waste Of Money, Poll Results... | Stuff.co.nz

Are you wasting your staff training dollars?

Many businesses may not think so, but it appears their staff think otherwise.

A Colmar Brunton-David Forman Business Training Survey shows only 28 per cent of New Zealanders think the work training they receive is linked to their career development and goals, and only half think it helps them to be more effective in their current role.

David Forman managing director Olivia Blaylock says the results are concerning for a number of reasons, especially to think businesses are spending money in the wrong areas during difficult economic times.

Blaylock said training can often be, wrongly, a "tick the box" exercise.

"Businesses need to step back and ask what they are trying to achieve," she said.

It's crucial that training is tailored to employees' needs. This is more common at the top level of organisations, but lower down, where public programmes are more common, can be lacking.

"At the moment, it's obvious the training dollar could be spent better. If New Zealand Inc is to become more competitive internationally, we have to ensure our workers are trained to reach their full potential."

Blaylock said continuous learning and skill development is a priority, and the survey revealed a strong interest from employees in developing leadership, management and personal effectiveness skills.

"That is really encouraging and highlights an area businesses should focus investment in."

She described as "sobering" the finding that half of those surveyed felt their training wasn't going to help them do their job better.

International research has shown that training is retained much better by staff if they believe it relates to their career development, she said.

While about half of the people surveyed reported receiving technical skill development training in the previous year, only 17 per cent said they had received training related to customer service, and 12 per cent sales skills; when it came to what they want in the next year, less than 10 per cent of respondents were after more training in sales skills or customer service.

Blaylock said both of those statistics are worrying, because sales and customer skills are absolutely crucial aspects of business success, and an area where New Zealand lags behind many of its competitors.

However, she said sales skills aren't as valued as they should be. While attitudes to sales in New Zealand are improving, they are still a long way from where they need to be.

"It's a mindset that needs to change," she said.

"Whether they recognise it or not, everyone who works for a business is a salesperson, from the CEO to the warehouse operator, or the receptionist. New Zealand's mentality towards sales needs to change."

Blaylock said salespeople, because they are close to the customer, can help organisations see through issues, anticipate clients needs and spot opportunities to add value.

"Good salespeople are good listeners rather than good talkers," she said.

That's vital because, as business becomes more commoditised, competition intensifies and information about products and pricing becomes more accessible, organisations needed to be on their game.

Training investment is known as a key to ensuring staff remain loyal and committed, with a third of people surveyed wanting more training.

"That is a significant group. The survey has shown that the key is for organisations to get the balance of quality and quantity right, and spend their training dollar on the most effective training available."

The survey was carried out by Colmar Brunton online in May 2012.

The sample was representative of the New Zealand online population by age.

Ecuador says Britain withdraws threat to raid embassy

QUITO (Reuters) - Britain has withdrawn a threat to enter Ecuador's embassy in London to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who has taken refuge there, President Rafael Correa said on Saturday, taking the heat out of the diplomatic standoff.

"We consider this unfortunate incident over, after a grave diplomatic error by the British in which they said they would enter our embassy," Correa said in a weekly media address.

In a statement, Ecuador's government said it had received "a communication from the British Foreign Office which said that there was no threat to enter the embassy."

Ecuador was furious after the British government warned it might try to seize Assange, who has been holed up in the building for more than two months trying to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations.

Ecuador, which has granted the former computer hacker asylum, demanded that Britain's threat be retracted. The latest move should improve relations between Quito and London and allow more talks on Assange's fate to take place.

For now, however, Assange remains trapped in the embassy with British police waiting outside. Britain has said it is determined to fulfill a legal obligation to send him to Sweden.

The Washington-based Organization of American States had condemned Britain's threat, and South American foreign ministers strongly backed Correa's position that Britain's warning was unacceptable and could set a dangerous precedent.

Correa says he shares Assange's fears that if handed over to Sweden, he could then be extradited to the United States to face charges over WikiLeaks' 2010 publication of secret U.S. cables.

U.S. and European government sources say the United States has issued no criminal charges against the WikiLeaks founder and has launched no attempt to extradite him.

Ecuador's government says it never intended to prevent Assange from facing justice in Sweden. It has said that if he received written guarantees from Britain and Sweden that he would not be extradited to any third country then Assange would hand himself over to the Swedish authorities.

Assange, whose platinum hair and friendships with the rich and famous have helped make him a global celebrity, spoke from the embassy's balcony last weekend, denouncing what he called a "witch hunt" by the United States against him and WikiLeaks.

Lance Armstrong banned from cycling for life, career vacated

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency erased 14 years of Lance Armstrong's career Friday ? including his record seven Tour de France titles ? and banned him for life from the sport that made him a hero to millions of cancer survivors after concluding he used banned substances.

USADA said it expected cycling's governing body to take similar action, but the International Cycling Union was measured in its response, saying it first wanted a full explanation on why Armstrong should relinquish Tour titles he won from 1999 through 2005.

The Amaury Sport Organization that runs the world's most prestigious cycling race said it would not comment until hearing from the UCI and USADA, which contends the cycling body is bound by the World Anti-Doping Code to strip Armstrong of one of the most incredible achievements in sports.

Armstrong, who retired a year ago, said Thursday that he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he ever took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without a shred of physical evidence.

He is now officially a drug cheat in the eyes of his nation's doping agency.

"Any time we have overwhelming proof of doping, our mandate is to initiate the case through the process and see it to conclusion as was done in this case," said USADA chief executive Travis Tygart, who couched the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture."

Tygart said the UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

"They have no choice but to strip the titles under the code," he said.

The UCI and USADA have engaged in a turf war over who should prosecute allegations against Armstrong. The UCI event backed Armstrong's failed legal challenge to USADA's authority, and it cited the same World Anti-Doping Code in saying that it wanted to hear more from the American agency.

"As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision" explaining the action taken, the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement. It said legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases "where no hearing occurs."

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will await decisions by USADA and UCI before taking any steps against Armstrong, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games. Besides the disqualifications, Armstrong will forfeit any medals, winnings, points and prizes, USADA said, but the lost titles that now dominate his legacy.

Every one of Armstrong's competitive races from Aug. 1, 1998, has been vacated by USADA, established in 2000 as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Since Armstrong raced in UCI-sanctioned events, he was subject to international drug rules enforced in the U.S. by USADA. Its staff joined a federal criminal investigation of Armstrong that ended earlier this year with no charges being filed.

USADA, which announced its investigation in June, said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and even used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour.

In all, USADA said up to 10 former Armstrong teammates were set to testify against him. Included in the case were emails sent by Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, describing an elaborate doping program on Armstrong's Postal Service teams, and Tyler Hamilton's interview with "60 Minutes" claiming had personal knowledge of Armstrong doping.

Had Armstrong chosen to pursue arbitration, USADA said, all the evidence would have been available for him to challenge.

"He chose not to do this knowing these sanctions would immediately be put into place," the statement said.

The decision surprised riders around the world.

At the Spanish Vuelta, riders including former rival and teammate Alberto Contador joined ex-Armstrong coach Johan Bruyneel in offering support. Another former rival, Filippo Simeoni, wondered why Armstrong dropped his fight..

"It leaves me a bit perplexed, because someone like him, with all the fame and popularity and millions of dollars he has, should fight to the end if he's innocent," Simeoni said. "But I guess he realized it was a useless fight and the evidence USADA had was too great."

At the USA Pro Challenge in Breckenridge, Colo., longtime friend Jim Ochowicz said he supported Armstrong's decision.

"He has done so much for our sport over the years and I am sad at what has transpired," he said. "I think he has earned every victory he's had."

Bruyneel said Armstrong was the victim of an "unjust" legal case.

"Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been," Bruyneel wrote on his personal website. The Belgian, who manages the Radioshack Nissan-Trek team, has his own legal battle with USADA. He has opted for arbitration to fight charges that he led doping programs for Armstrong's teams.

Armstrong clearly knew his legacy would be blemished by his decision. But he said he has grown tired of defending himself in a seemingly never-ending fight against charges that he doped while piling up more Tour victories than anyone ever. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong said Thursday night, hours before the deadline to enter arbitration.

"Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances," he said. "I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities."

Although he had already been crowned a world champion and won individual stages at the Tour de France, Armstrong was still relatively unknown in the U.S. until he won the epic race for the first time in 1999. It was the ultimate comeback tale: When diagnosed with cancer, doctors had given him less than a 50 percent chance of survival before surgery and brutal cycles of chemotherapy saved his life.

Armstrong's riveting victories, his work for cancer awareness and his gossip-page romances with rocker Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson made him a figure who transcended sports.

His dominance of the Tour de France elevated the sport's popularity in the U.S. to unprecedented levels. His story and success helped sell millions of the "Livestrong" plastic yellow wrist bracelets, and enabled him to enlist lawmakers and global policymakers to promote cancer awareness and research. His Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised nearly $500 million since its founding in 1997.

Foundation officials said they remained "proud" of Armstrong and had received hundreds of messages of support from donors, partners and supporters since his announcement. Among them was Nike Inc., which said it planned to continue supporting Armstrong and the foundation.

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position," the company said.

American Century Investments, another partner, said: "While the actions taken against Lance are unfortunate, we understand his decision to drop his challenge to the USADA charges. The USADA may sanction Lance and attempt to strip his titles, but no one can take away what he's done for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer."

Questions surfaced even as Armstrong was on his way to his first Tour victory. He was leading the 1999 race when a trace amount of a banned anti-inflammatory corticosteroid was found in his urine; cycling officials said he was authorized to use a small amount of a cream to treat saddle sores.

After Armstrong's second victory in 2000, French judicial officials investigated his Postal Service team for drug use. That investigation ended with no charges, but the allegations kept coming.

Others close to Armstrong were caught up in the investigations, too: Bruyneel, the coach of Armstrong's teams, and three members of the medical staff and a consultant were also charged. Bruyneel is taking his case to arbitration, while two medical team staffers and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari didn't formally contest the charges and were issued lifetime bans by USADA. Ferrari later said he was innocent.

Armstrong was criticized for his relationship with Ferrari, who was banned by Italian authorities over doping charges in 2002. Former personal and team assistants accused Armstrong of having steroids in an apartment in Spain and disposing of syringes that were used for injections.

In 2004, a Dallas-based promotions company initially refused to pay him a $5 million bonus for winning his sixth Tour de France because it wanted to investigate allegations raised by media in Europe. Testimony in that case included former teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, Betsy, saying Armstrong told doctors during his 1996 cancer treatments that he had taken a cornucopia of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Armstrong retired in 2005 and almost immediately considered a comeback before deciding to stay on the sidelines ? in part because he didn't want to keep answering doping questions. Three years later, Armstrong was 36 and itching to ride again. He came back to finish third in the 2009 Tour de France.

Armstrong raced again in 2010 under the cloud of the federal investigation. Early last year, he quit for good, making a brief return as a triathlete until the USADA investigation shut him down.

"He had a right to contest the charges," WADA President John Fahey said. "He chose not to. The simple fact is that his refusal to examine the evidence means the charges had substance in them."
