Orphan care without orphanages | Ten ways to ... - Family Hope Love

Do you have a heart for orphans? Are you a family who has adopted ? or who feels called to adopt? Are you a Christian pastor or leader who wants to start an orphan care ministry?

In recent years, Christians have awoken to God?s heart for the Fatherless. We have been told there is an orphan crisis ? that there are 163 million orphans in the world today. Our hearts are broken, imaginging millions of children growing up with no mother, no father, no one to say I love you, you are mine.

When Christians hear about the orphan crisis, we?want to do something to help. Some families adopt. Others go on a mission trip to visit orphans. But most Christians who want to?get involved in orphan care focus on building or supporting an orphanage ? or sponsoring an orphan. On one hand, we know orphanages are not good for kids. We know orphanages have largely been replaced by foster care in?the United States.

But we assume that communities in the developing world are unwilling or unable ? as a result of poverty we cannot imagine ? to care for the growing number of orphans. We think there are no alternatives to orphanages. And so we pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into buildings. We send missionaries. We hire staff. We think this is the only way to care for orphans in places like Haiti or Uganda.

But is it possible to care for orphans without orphanages?

Yes.

The first thing we need to understand ? and the way Christians talk about the orphan crisis typically misses this truth ? is that most of the world?s orphans are already living in families.??I?ve written about the global orphan crisis before. Remember most of the world?s orphans have families ? and that these families are often vulnerable to poverty and exploitation. So whatever we do for the sake of James 1:27, remember?widows and orphans. Not just orphans.

?Ten ways to do orphan care without orphanages?

?If you are a Christian pastor, leader, church planter or missionary who is interested in starting an orphan care ministry, this is especially important for you. There are alternatives to building orphanages that are less expensive, more sustainable and better for the children, families, churches and communities we?re called to serve.

  1. Give women access to medical care during pregnancy and birth to prevent children being orphaned when their mothers die in childbirth. A safe birth kit from?Mercy for Mamas?costs just $7. Caring for a child in an orphanage costs upwards of $1000 a year.
  2. Set up a savings circle to give a community of vulnerable families access to capitol. Want to learn more about savings circles? Check out the work of Hope International.
  3. Empower a woman to start a business by giving her a microenterprise loan. In many countries, if you can?empower a?woman to make about $100 a month, she can provide safe housing, food, medical care and an education to her family. Check out Kiva.
  4. Sponsor a child in a family, not in an orphanage. Make sure the ministry you sponsor through is committed to sustainable development and works through local churches or communities. I think Compassion has a solid approach.
  5. Chickens, pigs, ducks, oh my! In many rural communities in the developing world, one of the most effective ways to help families earn a sustainable income is by helping them farm and raise animals. Read about the work of Food for the Hungry.
  6. Buy beautiful, handmade goods from artisans around the world.?Many of the artisan groups Noonday Collection works with in Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia and around the world give families a path out of poverty. This prevents children from being abandoned.
  7. Encourage Christians all around the world to get involved in foster care and adoption. The?Orphan Sunday movement led by Christian Alliance for Orphans is challenging belivers everywhere to care for orphans in families instead of institutions. It has already had an incredible impact in countries like Ukraine, bringing together churches and challenging thousands of families to get involved in orphan care and adoption.
  8. Plant?or partner with a church intead of?building an orphanage. Come alongside this church to encourage the local Christians to protect and provide for the orphans and widows in their community.?Churches can play an important role in developing networks of foster care. Read about Casa Viva. Churches can also?provide financial support to families who?are called to care for orphans.
  9. Challenge men to step up to be husbands and fathers who protect and provide for women and children. This is seldom talked about as a part of orphan care, but much of the brokeness at the root of the orphan crisis is caused by men abdicating their Biblical responsibility. Only Jesus can change the hearts of the fathers. Watch this video from Sojourn, a church plant in Uganda.
  10. Protect orphans and widows from exploitation. Child trafficking, slavery, forced prostitution, illegal property seizure?Christians are called to defend orphans and widows. One of the ministries that does this with excellence is International Justice Mission.

?

If you are thinking about starting an orphan care ministry, would you consider these alternatives?

What do you think can make a lasting difference in the lives of orphans and vulnerable families in the developing world?

I am writing in much greater depth about orphanages and orphan care in my book, In Defense of the Fatherless, which will hopefully be published in early 2013. If you want to learn more about these issues, please subscribe to follow Family Hope Love!

PFT: Lions, not Eagles, overcome mistakes to win

b96c26986e7249cd8a6f740fb0cc9778-e7ecc2dd9a1f43b689e8138b5a417555-1AP

Yeah, that stuff Aaron Rodgers was saying the other day about his own play not being up to par?

Never mind.

Rodgers was back to MVP Rodgers, and he dragged the Packers back to looking like champions along with him.

He was laser-sharp while carving up the Texans 42-24 Sunday night, completing 24-of-37 passes for 338 yards and six touchdowns, the same amount the Texans had allowed in their 5-0 start. (Watch the highlights here.)

And it wasn?t as if Rodgers stood back with clean pockets all day.

He stood in and took shots and delivered passes, he scrambled for first downs and more when plays broke down. He read through progressions, and found guys who weren?t the first choice.

In short, he was Rodgers again.

And as long as that?s the case, the 3-3 Packers are as good if not better than any team in the NFL.

Here?s another thing: They?re without their best wideout in Greg Jennings, although Jordy Nelson is quickly making that a debate. And a guy with bad hands (James Jones) has caught multiple touchdowns in three straight games.

Those things don?t happen in a vacuum, or with anything short of the best quarterback in the game throwing it to them.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. The Texans didn?t look like the undefeated team that really hadn?t been pushed.

Or maybe they did.

The Texans were able to beat five teams by an average of 15.2 points per game coming into this one, and it might not be an accident that all five were AFC teams.?In fact, the toughest of the lot might have been the Jets game, and the Jets can play a physical style you see more often in the other conference.

But from Connor Barwin trying to play buck-buck like Fat Albert on a field goal, to Danieal Manning trying to punch out from the bottom of a pile, the Texans played without much composure, which doesn?t bode well for the games that matter in January, when somebody else might punch back.

2. It?s not exactly breaking news to say that J.J. Watt is having a phenomenal year.

But with two more sacks, pushing him to 9.5 in six games, it becomes more amazing with each passing week.

A 3-4 defensive end is simply not supposed to do be able to do this. The job description, as originally written, doesn?t come close to what Watt is capable of doing. Ends in the 3-4 are supposed to contain the run, be solid and clog lanes for outside linebackers to make the glory plays.

It?s not like a receiver leading the league in rushing, but it?s at least the equivalent of a tight end leading the league in receiving yards, and speaks to his singular talent.

3. The Packers can?t keep inside linebackers healthy, but that doesn?t cover up the fact that one of them is playing very well.

Desmond Bishop was lost for the year with a preseason hamstring, and his replacement D.J. Smith left the game with a knee injury after a suspect block by Texans left tackle Duane Brown.

But the other Packers inside linebacker, A.J. Hawk, has been more than just solid of late, playing very well against the run.?The Packers (who were also missing nose tackle B.J. Raji) held Texans running back Arian Foster to 22 yards on 13 carries in the first half, when the run game was a viable option.

Hawk has taken a lot of criticism, and it?s easy to make a case that he?s overpaid. But he?s played well when the Packers needed him most.

4. One other quick note on the Brown hit on Smith.

The Texans have now ceded the moral high ground, and can no longer complain about linebacker Brian Cushing?s season-ending injury from a block of similar intent by Jets guard Matt Slauson.

You can?t have it both ways, fellas.

A wise man told me once there?s a difference between innocent and righteous. Just because it wasn?t flagged doesn?t make it right.

5. The Texans spent a lot of money ($48.75 million for five years) on cornerback Johnathan Joseph, and they?re? not getting a return on their investment lately.

There was no injury reported during the game, but he came out for a few plays for backup Alan Ball.

The Texans struggled last week in the secondary against the Jets, and if they were playing a team with actual receivers (and more of a quarterback), it might have cost them then.

It caught up with them Sunday night.

Joseph is a good cover player, but his two-week lapse is noticeable, and something they can?t afford.

Make Sure Your Business Plan Has An Internet Marketing Plan

There have been many novice PC users who have seen major success with Internet businesses; you may be the next Internet superstar. The tips provided here will guide you along the path to becoming a highly effective Internet marketer.

Seek partnerships with fellow online merchants so that you can put together joint offerings that you can sell at competitive prices. This tactic is a sound strategy to create connections between multiple markets. This has a cumulative effect of boosting overall revenue. Online travel services are the quintessential example of good packaging. They combine the services of airplane ticketing, car rental and hotel booking, generating higher sales volume for all three and making their own tidy profit. This technique works very well for companies who offer complementary products without being rivals.

If your business has a successful marketing plan, you are probably aware of which specific products and services consistently generate the most profit. Use your most profitable products as a way to generate additional sales. Advertise your big sellers and provide bridges to complementary products once you have sold your most popular product. This will help some of your other products get a sales boost from your best sellers, and they will require less advertising than other products that don?t have some kind of tie-in.

HTML tags are very important for optimizing your website for search engines. Your important content is indicated by these tags and will be displayed in bold. A search engine spider will judge your page based on what is emphasized by these tags. Be sure to emphasize the important keywords.

Offer people a guarantee when you market your products on the Internet. Customers want to know that your product is a sure bet before they part with their hard-earned cash. You can offer different types of guarantees for different products. Two options are 90 day guarantees and lifetime guarantees. Depending on the quality of your product, you should choose the guarantee that will provide confidence without destroying your profits.

Real-time leads are necessary if you are looking to increase sales. These sorts of leads give you the access to a customer who has searched for info on your products. With a real-time lead, you get a potential customer?s information the moment they inquire about your products.

There is tough competition on the Internet from big companies. There are a couple things you can do to try and stay ahead of the game. You should re-price your items often to stay competitive with others in the same niche. Make sure you have a centralized web store where people can see all of the things you have to offer.

Try different ways to award prizes. For example, you can try disguising certain words into your articles and asking your customers to locate them. Offer prizes and discounts for those that find them. Having activities on your site that involve customers makes the experience more personal and encourages them to come back.

Closely evaluate the actions of your top competitors and analyze that data to formulate your own plans. If you see yourself as a potential customer for their products, then they are doing something right. You should find a way to incorporate these ideas into your strategy.

Create a website that has informative content and is easy to navigate. Your main goal is to educate your audience about your product or service in a limited amount of time. To keep your audience?s attention, make sure you do not repeat any statements and keep out useless and filler content.

No internet marketing venture will succeed through luck alone, so remember that it always takes hard work and dedication. The same is true for any other business; no successful business got where it is today through luck alone. Coke was not ?lucky? when they invented their famous soft drink. It certainly wasn?t. It took quite a bit of skilled marketing to turn it into a best-seller.

Give your customers the chance to sign up to your Ezine. This effective marketing tool is especially potent if you create an interesting Ezine that promotes a strong relationship with subscribers. Bring your personality into your site with pictures of staff and family. Don?t be afraid to share funny or interesting stories from your personal life with your readers. When you use a title that sparks their interest, they will be more likely to click!

Think seriously about mobile marketing. You could, for instance, send out mobile alerts when you are having a special sale. Mobile marketing is quickly becoming a necessary component of any successful marketing campaign.

Make sure you use offer customers a guarantee, it is a surefire way to increase your success. While guarantees may not always be true, they will greatly enhance the number of sales you generate. They work hard for their money, and a guarantee makes them feel comfortable about spending it.

Most mobile phone companies let you add a dedicated work number to your existing phone. It is important, therefore, that you take the necessary steps to get a number.

Knowing what your competition is up to is a necessity if you want to stay ahead of them. Peruse your competitors? websites, noting what they could be doing better. If you see that other websites lack a certain service or element, develop this characteristic on your own website.

Keep customers coming back by sending coupons with every purchase. People love coupons and are eager to get a good deal on any additional purchases at your website.

You need to have a list of customers and addresses. Allow sign-ups on your site or require emails for purchases. This information can be used to solicit customer feedback or contact customers with sales and special offers.

Nearly any ad will benefit from including a promise to keep the process of purchasing fast and gratifying. Brag about how quickly your customers can use your site, have products delivered to their front doors and see the amazing results of using your products or services. This means improving download speed, having very fast checkouts, or quickly confirming orders.

It will take a while to master a niche, but you need to start in order to reach that phase. This information will help you get started with reaching your goals.

Can Packers get back on track?

SNF game against undefeated Houston isn?t a must win, but it certainly would be much-needed

ANALYSIS

By Greg Bedard

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 3:07 p.m. ET Oct. 13, 2012

Greg Bedard

It doesn?t get much worse for the Packers than last week?s 30-27 loss to the Colts, who are in the early stages of a rebuilding effort and are basically an expansion team.

The Packers led the game 21-3, and fell to 2-3 on the season.

Their season, which had them pegged as a Super Bowl favorite before the season, is at a crossroads. Sunday night?s game against the Texans isn?t a must win, but it certainly would be much-needed.

The good news is that this group, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, has been in this position before.

And they?ve triumphed each time against a familiar face.

In 2009, the Packers suffered a terrible 38-28 road loss to the then-winless Buccaneers to drop to 4-4.

The next week, the 6-2 Cowboys came to Lambeau Field and were dominated 17-7 by the Packers in a game they led 17-0.

Green Bay finished 11-5 and lost an overtime playoff game to the Cardinals.

In 2010, the Packers lost 23-20 in overtime to a Dolphins team that would finish 7-9.

Green Bay won its next four games, including a home win against Brett Favre and the Vikings 28-24, on the road 9-0 against a Jets team that entered the game 5-1, and a 45-7 home victory over the Cowboys.

The Packers finished 10-6, squeaked into the playoffs and won the Super Bowl.

Those Cowboys teams were coached by Wade Phillips.

He?ll be on the sideline Sunday night in Houston as the Texans? defensive coordinator.

Phillips? counterpart will, just like in the previous two meetings, be Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who was the head coach of the expansion Texans from 2002-05.

That?s just one of the many subplots in this nationally televised showdown. To emerge with a victory, the Packers and Texans (5-0) will need to hit on three keys to the game.

Packers
Be gap sound vs. the run:
The Texans, behind star running back Arian Foster, are sixth in the league with 143.0 yards per game on the ground. They do it with a perfect blend of a well-executed zone blocking scheme, where the line tries to stretch out the defense laterally while opening up running lanes, and Foster?s elite ability to anticipate the hole and burst through it. The Packers must contain the Texans? running game or else they?ll never get off the field. If nose tackle B.J. Raji (ankle) can?t play, it would be a huge blow for the Packers. Veteran Ryan Pickett would have to slide from end to the nose, and C.J. Wilson and rookie Jerel Worthy would be the ends. All three must hold their gaps against the offensive line, and allow the four linebackers ? Erik Walden/Nick Perry, A.J. Hawk, D.J. Smith and Clay Matthews ? to properly wall up against the run. The secondary must fill and have to make repeated clean tackles.

Be productive on the first two downs: Because of penalties and poor execution, the Packers have repeatedly got themselves into bad distances on third down. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been sacked six times on his 20 dropbacks on third down with 9-plus yards to go (30 percent). His completion percentage of 65.9 percent on third down is his lowest on any down. The Packers need to find a way to be successful on the first two downs ? running the ball, even without Cedric Benson (foot injury), would help ? so Rodgers is in a better position. That?s especially true against the Texans, who like to blitz and have an excellent pass rush. But when given the opportunity, the Packers need to test the Texans? secondary, which is soft at safety, and at nickel back with Brice McCain. This could be a breakout game for slot receiver Randal Cobb.

Stop Watt: Texans end J.J. Watt is on his way to being NFL Defensive Player of the Year with his 8.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for a loss and eight passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. He?s big (6-6, 295 pounds), fast and relentless. On passing downs, Watt moves inside to left defensive tackle. That should match him up against the Packers? best offensive lineman, right guard Josh Sitton. With Antonio Smith being another very good interior rusher, the Packers are going to have to have a sound plan. It starts with Watt. The Packers must limit his impactful plays. Force the other Texans to generate pressure against Rogers, because right now Watt is a one-man wrecking crew.

Texans keys
Account for Clay Matthews:
There is no question that the outside linebacker is the biggest playmaker for the Packers. He?s explosive rushing the passer, and has great instincts to knife through against the run and stop it. With the right side of the Texans? line with guard Antoine Caldwell and tackle Derek Newton being much weaker than the left, expect the Packers to keep Matthews on the defensive left side for much of the game. Even if the Texans have to keep a tight end to double Matthews, Houston must do it. If Matthews is contained, the Packers are going to have a hard time getting off the field.

Control the clock: With their excellent rushing attack, and perhaps the league?s best play-action passing game, the Texans are tough to get off the field for even the NFL?s most disciplined defenses. If the Texans can control the game on the ground and through a short, effective passing attack, it?s going to put pressure on the Packers? offense to produce on each drive. The Texans should focus on grinding out this game, because it?s what they do best. The Packers want to be explosive and the game to be fast paced. If they can?t get either, the Packers are going to start pressing and that?s when mistakes can happen.

Make the Packers drive the field: Without Benson, receiver Greg Jennings (groin) and possibly tight end Jermichael Finley (shoulder), the Packers are lacking big-play players. Texans cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson should be able to hold their own on the outside. McCain, the nickel corner, could have a tough matchup against Cobb. In any event, the Texans should err on playing more conservatively. The Packers have been sloppy on offense so far with sacks, penalties and dropped passes. If the Texans give the Packers enough rope (driving the length of the field) on each possession, they might just do part of the work for the Texans by stalling themselves. That?s what Green Bay has done so far this season.

Credit Card for Merchants | Young Voice for world of finance

We all know how credit card is showing up as life saver whenever we are running out of cash or when our debit card has no leftover balance. Of course that the credit card has its limitation and it is useable as long it doesn?t reach the limit. Many financial planners are suggesting that every businessman should have what they refer as credit card for merchant services. Judging by the name, the bank is offering credit card services for businessman and let?s what they have to offer.

Since the credit card service is intended for businessman and merchants, it means that you can use it as additional for your business capital where not only you can get the chance to expand your business by setting up new branch in other areas, adding transportation vehicle to complete your distribution flow, and even to add employees.

There are many advantages that the businessman or the merchant can get from the new credit card service, but what most important is that they have to know the requirements to have the merchant account. The very first thing you have to do is providing the legal document and paperwork for the business venture that the businessman and merchant are currently running. If they still have on going credit at other banks, it is better to insert the paperwork as well.

How To Find Great Domain Names For Your Sites | Content for Reprint

Author: Toby Russell | Total views: 56 Comments: 0
Word Count: 840 Date:

In this article I'm going to cover what is a really fundamental element to your online success and unfortunately for many just starting out its one that's often overlooked in the initial enthusiasm of getting online in a hurry.

Do Research First And believe me we all make the same mistakes, Sam My wife and I when we first started out rushed over to GoDaddy and bought what we believed to be great domains for various niches, no research, no looking at how people were searching just what we thought sounded good. What a mistake that was, so read on and learn some key tips to getting a great domain ?..

A good domain name is like a great piece of real estate property. It's your site's home on the web. It has a major influence on your traffic and sales. A good, clean, keyword-rich domain name is worth a lot more than most people realize. This is why it's important to find good ones and sometimes to pay a pretty price for them.

Think Outside The Box If the one you want is unavailable, don't despair. It's well worth searching for the right one. There are a number of different places where you can find domain names that are old and expired. These are auction sites where you can bid on names that you like. Some of the best auction sites are Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com), Aged Domain Finder (www.ageddomainfinder.com) and BustAName (www.bustaname.com).

You can also find great domain names by simply searching for sites on Google and then contacting webmasters. Search for the keywords, location and any other information you're looking for, or just type in the domain name you want. If you find one that's expired, do a WhoIs search and contact the Webmaster. They may sell it to you.

What Are The Best Domain Names?

The best domain names are simple. They're things like www.dogs.com or www.golf.com. Believe it or not, there are lots of people looking for golf information online who will type in 'www.golf.com' instead of using Google search. But don't expect to see either of these for sale, or at least not for under a gazillion dollars; these are just examples!

If you're working in micro-niches, take your most-targeted keywords and give them a try. There are lots of 'how to' and 'tips' domain names up for sale that don't cost an arm and a leg. Try to find something that's either an exact match, or your targeted keyword phrase with one or two additional words.

When you're looking at expired domain names, you should always research them well. Look at their age. Older domain names are better because Google has known them for a while. Even if they've been parked for years, you'll still get major traffic benefits. Also, check their PR and Alexa ranking just in case they might have some love from Google already.

Domain names that end in .com are always better. There's absolutely no doubting this. But they can also be priced astronomically high. Although .net, .org, .info. .biz and all the others aren't quite as good, they're still worth it if it's a good name.

Domain Name Resources

Coming up with your own domain name (rather than buying an expired one) is always the cheapest option. You just have to pay to register it. But what if you're out of ideas? A great resource that can help you is NameStation (www.namestation.com). This is a site that helps you think of random domain names and also shows if they're available. It also has a bulk domain name search function that's really fast.

Other sites for coming up with names include:

Dislexicon - www.robobunny.com/cgi-bin/dislexicon

Word Mixer - unique-names.com/word-mixer.php

Word Finder - www.puzzledepot.com/wordfinder2/crossword.html

If you want to look for expired domain names, here are some other resources:

Go Daddy Auctions - auctions.godaddy.com

Aged Domain Finder - www.ageddomainfinder.com

BustAName - www.bustaname.com

JustDropped - justdropped.com

Sedo - www.sedo.com

Bido - www.bido.com

AfterNic - www.afternic.com

DomainsBot - domainsbot.com

DomainMonkey - www.domainmonkey.com

DomainTools - www.domaintools.com

GreatDomains - www.greatdomains.com

NameJet - www.namejet.com

SnapNames - www.snapnames.com

WinYourDomain - www.winyourdomain.com/auctions

So there you have it, spend time searching for the right names, check them out, is it what people are searching for? Be harsh with yourself and discard those ideas that although they may look good don't return worthwhile search results.

2: Article Marketing Strategy: Putting Together a "Class Schedule" For Your Article Topics

Police: Body identified as missing Colorado girl

Police in Westminster, Colo., today officially confirmed that a body found Wednesday belongs to missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

"We recognize there is a predator at large in our community," said Westminster, Colo., Police Chief Lee Birk.

The girl had been missing since Oct. 5.

"The commitment of the task force of investigators in this case will not waver," said James Yacone, special agent in charge of the FBI's Denver office. "Our commitment and resolve to seek justice on behalf of Jessica will only grow stronger."

Yacone said that in the past week investigators have searched 500 homes, 1,000 vehicles and received 1,500 tips.

ABC News reported Wednesday that law enforcement sources believed the body found in Arvada, Colo., was Jessica's, based on several factors. Positive identification, however, was delayed until now because the body was badly dismembered and "not intact", police said Thursday.

Jessica's body was found about seven miles from her home in Westminster, Colo. Her backpack and water bottle were recovered from a neighborhood subdivision in Superior, Colo., on Sunday.

Ridgeway's mother, Sarah, told police she last saw her daughter in Westminster Friday morning when Jessica left for school. The fifth-grader never showed up at a nearby park where she was supposed to meet friends for the one-mile walk to her elementary school. It was a route she took every day, but this time she never arrived.

The school called to report Jessica absent, but Sarah Ridgeway told police she was asleep during the day because she works overnights and did not get the call until eight hours later, when she called police.

On Thursday, the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit released a profile of who they think committed the crime.

The suspect is most likely a man, the FBI said. He might have been a "no show" and missed work immediately after the incident and offered a plausible excuse such as illness, death in the family or car trouble.

The individual might express an intense interest in the status of the investigation and pay close attention to the media. But some offenders might quickly turn off media accounts or try to redirect conversations concerning the victims or their families, according to the FBI.

"It could be your boss, it could be your friend and, ultimately, it could be your family member," FBI spokesman David Joly said.

New treatments for epilepsy, behavioral disorders could ... - Health.am

? Epilepsy ? ? Neurology ? Oct 11, 2012

Three studies conducted as part of Wayne State University?s Systems Biology of Epilepsy Project (SBEP) could result in new types of treatment for the disease and, as a bonus, for behavioral disorders as well.

The SBEP started out with funds from the President?s Research Enhancement Fund and spanned neurology, neuroscience, genetics and computational biology. It since has been supported by multiple National Institutes of Health-funded grants aimed at identifying the underlying causes of epilepsy, and it is uniquely integrated within the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the Wayne State School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center.

Under the guidance of Jeffrey Loeb, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG) and professor of neurology, the project brings together researchers from different fields to create an interdisciplinary research program that targets the complex disease. The multifaceted program at Wayne State is like no other in the world, officials say, with two primary goals: improving clinical care and creating novel strategies for diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy.

The three studies were published in high-impact journals and use human brain tissue research to identify new targets for drug development, generate a new animal model and identify a new class of drugs to treat the disease. In the first study, ?Layer-Specific CREB Target Gene Induction in Human Neocortical Epilepsy,? published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience, donated human brain samples were probed to identify 137 genes strongly associated with epileptic seizures.

Researchers then showed that the most common pathway is activated in very specific layers of the cortex, and that it?s associated with increased numbers of synapses in those areas. Because epilepsy is a disease of abnormal neuronal synchrony, the finding could explain why some brain regions produce clinical seizures.

?Higher density of synapses may explain how abnormal epileptic discharges, or spikes, are formed, and in what layer,? Loeb said, adding that localizing the exact layer of the brain in which that process occurs is useful both for understanding the mechanism and for developing therapeutics.

The first study, which identified a new drug target for epilepsy, precipitated a second study that has found such a drug.

In the second study, ?Electrical, Molecular and Behavioral Effects of Interictal Spiking in the Rat,? published recently in Neurobiology of Disease, SBEP researchers found that the same brain layers in the rat are activated as in the human tissues and searched for a drug to target those layers. In fact, the first drug they tried, a compound called SL327 that has been used in nonhuman subjects to understand how memory works, ?worked like a dream,? Loeb said. ?SL327 prevented spiking in rat brains,? he said, ?which not only prevented seizures, but led to more normal behaviors as well.?

That finding led to collaborations between Loeb?s lab and Nash Boutros, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, and the Belgian drug company UCB.

?Whereas animals that developed epileptic spiking became hyperactive, those treated with the drug and had less spiking in their brains were more like normal animals,? Loeb said. ?Now whenever we screen for drugs for epilepsy, we look at behavior as well as epileptic activity.?

Noting that many seizure medicines currently are used to treat various psychiatric disorders, Loeb said the SBEP team?s latest round of work marks a ?nice crossover? between psychiatry and neurology in the field of drugs related to epilepsy.

In the third study, just published in Genetics, researchers say they have found ?fascinating interrelationships? between ?junk? long noncoding RNA and normal RNA that are regulated by human brain activity. That work has the potential to be translated into new genetic treatments for epilepsy.

?This study shows how the human brain deals with half of the human genome in its most important function, electrical activity, using human brain tissue from patients with epilepsy to understand the basic molecular processes of how the brain works, and what?s unique about human brains compared to the brains of less-developed species,? Loeb said.

The third study, titled ?Activity-Dependent Human Brain Coding/Noncoding Gene Regulatory Networks,? is a collaborative effort between Loeb?s lab and Leonard Lipovich, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurology and molecular medicine and genetics. It found that certain genes and their noncoding counterparts (which some researchers have called ?junk") are co-regulated, or turned on at the same time, with brain activity.

?This tells us that some of these noncoding genes may actually have functions in brain activity,? Loeb said. ?In some, turning one on turns another one off. Some are regulatory and can be used to control plasticity genes - which are involved in memory, learning and behavior - with one of these novel, noncoding RNA genes.?

The synergy exhibited by the three studies, Loeb said, is testimony to the multidisciplinary nature of Wayne State?s systems biology platform, partly developed with a remarkable three-dimensional database created in cooperation with Farshad Fotouhi, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering, and Jing Hua, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science.

?SBEP is a cross-campus endeavor,? Loeb said. ?These studies are the fruits of the labor of this consortium and only exist at WSU. The next steps will be translating these exciting findings into new treatments to prevent or even cure patients with epilepsy and other psychiatric disorders.?

The above studies were funded by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), grant Nos. R01NS045207, R01Ns05058802, F30NS049776; by the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the NIH, grant No. 1R03DA0262-01; and by the State of Michigan Joe Young Funds to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, and were started with help from the WSU President?s Research Enhancement Fund.

Wayne State University is one of the nation?s pre-eminent public research universities in an urban setting. Through its multidisciplinary approach to research and education, and its ongoing collaboration with government, industry and other institutions, the university seeks to enhance economic growth and improve the quality of life in the city of Detroit, state of Michigan and throughout the world.

Love is Eternal ? The Bazaar

If you have been following my blog for some time now, you?ll know that I love to try out new experiences, am a great believer of living life to the fullest and a foodie. Trying out new places fits perfectly into my passion and recently, I had a wonderful dinner date to try out some wonderful North Indian?Cuisine.

The Bazaar has landed in Katong area which is a place I frequently head to for meals. This place is just opened for less than a month! The location is pretty accessible as they are located opposite I12 Katong Shopping Center and next to Astons Steak House. It?s a 2 story restaurant with a pretty big upper area that you can book for parties!

We had the whole upper area to ourselves that day! Let me head straight to the most important thing. The food and if they are good.

I started of my tastings with a glass of mago lassi ($4.50). In my opinion lassi rarely goes wrong and this one had the right amount of?yogurt and mango to give it sufficient?flavors?without it being too sweet.

My?favorite?in the appetizers section is the Tandoori Aloo ($8.90) which is simple comfort food of baked potatoes stuffed with cottage cheese and spices. The texture and taste is just nice without being overwhelming.

The Tandoori Chicken ($11.90) is a popular dish for the appetizers as well. The roasted chicken is beautifully prepared with?yogurt?and spices.

The Samosa ($5.90) was huge! I just had a nibble of this. It tasted fine but ?I much preferred the other appetizers.

A fresh basket of poppadams ($3.50) accompanied us throughout our meal. Unlike the usual poppadams we are used to, this one is freshly made and is a tad spicy as it has a very strong black pepper flavor.

Next came the main courses! Each portion of food can feed about 3 persons so it?s good to get a bigger group together to try out more dishes.

The Fish Amritsari ($13.90) was good and not too spicy. I wouldn?t have chosen to order this dish if I had gone on my own but after trying it, I?ve changed my mind!

These were the chicken dishes. The Chicken Tikka Masala ($12.90) and the Butter Chicken ($12.90). ?Between the two, my vote goes to the butter chicken. In general, butter chicken is my all-time fave when it comes to Indian?cuisine?so I could be a little basis in my choice but how can I say no to a rich creamy buttery chicken with just the right amount of spices.

The Bazaar has a wide selection for vegetarians as well. And 2 of the vegetarian mains I?ve tried are the Veg Jhal Frez ($11.90) and the Dum Aloo Masala (10.90). Both are great tasting and I feel that Veg Jhal Frenzi with it?s stronger tomato base makes it a pretty unique dish.

The other accompaniments we had that night were Garlic Naan ($3.00), Onion-Chilli Kulcha ($4.00), Chicken Dum Biryani (13.90), Vegetable Biryani ($11.90) and ?Dal Makhani ($9.90). The biryani rice is long and very?flavorful, great for a one -dish meals especially if you come for weekday lunch. For weekday lunch, the Chicken Biryani Set that comes with 1 soft drink is only $12.90 and if you want add any additional item to your lunch, it?s only $1 more! A totally good deal but do go with an empty growling tummy cause the portions are generous!

We tried 2 types of dessert. The first one is Rice and Nuts?Yogurt Pudding which is so new that it?s not even in their menu yet!

The second one is Gulab Jamun ($4.90) which?made of a dough consisting mainly of milk solids that is deep fried and soaked in a syrup that has spices, rosewater and saffron. This dessert is popular among many Indians and the first time I tried it at an Indian wedding, it was so sweet I nearly choked! I was a little hesitant to try it again but when I did, it was perfect! The chef had toned the sweetness down to a comfortable and delicious level. The restaurant owner suggested having Gulab Jamun with vanilla ice-cream which made this dessert a hit with me!

If you ever order this dessert in the restaurant, I highly recommend you to add ice-cream for only $1 more. The fusion makes it a gorgeous dessert for anyone and I gobbled up the whole thing on my own even when I was throughly stuffed by then.

To end the meal, we had traditional masala tea. Not too strong and sweet, this was the perfect ending to the perfect North Indian?Cuisine. That was until we spotted Bazaar?s Coffee on the menu and William decided to ordered it since it was a specialty for Bazaar.

?

The coffee order lead to one of the biggest discovery that night! We learnt that to create this specialty coffee, they first had to make a special coffee cream which requires an hour or two worth of stirring coffee and milk till it?s a paste.

We tasted the coffee cream paste in its concentrate form and I was so addicted to it! It?s sweet but packs a potent coffee punch. I tried it with my Gulab Jamun dessert with vanilla ice-cream and the combination was a beautiful?medley of flavors that resembled a North Indian tiramisu. Just soooooo sooooo good! Everyone on the table agreed and the owner even said that they will include it in the new menu! If you go The Bazaar for your taste of India, please?remember?to order Gulab Jamun with ice-cream and coffee cream. Even if it?s not on the menu yet, they would be happy to oblige and you won?t get this dessert anywhere else! I love how the owner is big on trying out new fusion tastes and is absolutely dedicated to good indian?cuisine. Unfortunately, she?s camera shy so I didn?t take a photo with her.

I love the dessert so much that I?m intending on going back soon for the special creation we came up with as well as to try the veg Hakka Noodles (from the kids menu) because the owner told me chinese indian food is a big thing in india and it?s a very popular?cuisine.

If you want to try out The Bazaar, it?s at?115 East Coast Road.

Opening hours are 11.30am to 2.30pm and 6pm to 9.30pm.
