Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai arrives in the United States on Tuesday. His schedule includes a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and he?ll meet with President Barack Obama on Friday.
The primary topics for the meetings: How quickly to draw down U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and what the role of the U.S. will be in Afghanistan after 2014.
Senior White House officials will hold an on-the-record conference call Tuesday on Karzai?s visit.
Also worth noting on what appears to be a quiet Tuesday in Washington: The Urban Institute will host a forum titled ?Fiscal Cliffhanger: Playing Chicken at the Policy Precipice,? the Brookings Institution will hold a forum titled ?Washington vs. Washington (and Colorado): Who Should Decide About Marijuana?? and over at the Heritage Foundation the topic will be ?What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense.?
And then there is this: ?Zero Dark Thirty,? the dramatized thriller about the operation to find terrorist Osama bin Laden, premieres Tuesday in Washington at the Newseum. The movie has sparked controversy over scenes that imply "enhanced interrogations" of CIA detainees produced a breakthrough in the bin Laden hunt.
And this: Tuesday marks two years since Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head at close range while holding a political event outside a Safeway store in Tucson, Ariz. Six people were killed in the incident. Jared Loughner was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a guilty plea in August 2012.
