Provo ? Legendary Utah television and radio sports announcer Jay Monsen, one of the primary voices of BYU sports from 1972 to 2010, died Sunday after his fourth bout with cancer. He was 79.
Monsen had been living the past few years in the small central Utah town of Mount Pleasant, after doing his final radio broadcast for BYU, a women?s basketball game, in 2010.
"Jay was a Cougar sports broadcasting pioneer," noted BYU associate athletic director Duff Tittle on his Twitter account Sunday. "He called hundreds of BYU athletic events and paved the way for what is today BYUtv."
Monsen graduated from BYU in 1957 and joined BYU Broadcast Services in 1972, eventually broadcasting more than 2,200 athletic events for KBYU and other media outlets. Prior to arriving at BYU, he was the press secretary for Utah congressman Gunn McKay and also worked for a radio station in Cedar City, where he was a longtime news and sports director and called high school games and athletic events at the school that has become Southern Utah University.
He served as the "Voice of Cougar Sports" for KBYU from 1972-1984 and became the school?s electronics media relations director in 1984. He also served as BYU?s associate sports information director from 1984-1988.
Monsen was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the BYU Hall of Fame in 2010.
Monsen?s wife of nearly 55 years, Lauretta, died last April. He is survived by seven children, 35 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services are pending.
