HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers said the U.S. military probably will get hit with a devastating series of automatic budget cuts, but he's hopeful military commanders will be able to handle it.
The automatic cuts, known as "sequestration," had been scheduled to hit at the end of 2012 but have been delayed until the beginning of March.
Rogers is now chairman of the new House Strategic Forces Subcommittee, which oversees initiatives like NASA and Missile Defense through Redstone.
He said the federal government must get its spending under control but also needs to get its priorities straight.
"The truth is you don't really need a lot of Medicare and Medicaid and social security if you've been attacked and you've got tanks in your streets, so we want to make sure we keep the nation safe first and foremost,?? but we also want to keep those vital programs that are critical to our country," he said.
Talks on how sequestration will hit are still going on in Washington.
Rogers said blind across the board budget cuts would be a disaster for American national security. He said he hopes the Pentagon will at least be given the flexibility to figure out where the cuts should hit in the military budget.
